My cat has painful mouth ulcers and struggles to eat. What can I do?

Ulcer in the mouth can be caused by various reasons in cats, calici virus would be one of the most common reasons, in some cases an antibiotic course can help, in others only teeth extraction will solve the problem. please take your cat to the vet ASAP to get him treated.

Ouch - yes, poor Oliver does appear to have a pretty large oral ulcer. Most of the time, these oral ulcers are caused by an eosinophilic granuloma complex, but they can be associated with ulcerated masses, such as a squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. They'll be able to examine him and will likely recommend either taking a biopsy of this lesion so that a pathologist can help to determine the cause of the lesion. Knowing the exact culprit will help to guide the treatment, which is likely to include various oral medications, such as steroids, immunosuppressants, and sometimes antibiotics. Until your appointment, you may want to offer him canned food (if you aren't already), as this may be more comfortable for him to eat than dry food. Unfortunately there is no topical numbing oral solution for cats that I know of but something such as Sucralfate may help alleviate the ulcerations inside of the mouth. I would discuss this with a veterinarian as you will need a prescription to get Sucralfate. If she has stomatitis, she may need to have all of her teeth removed to help resolve this problem. Calicivirus infection can cause this kind of signs and not respond to steroids. A sample obtained by a swab from the lesions can easily identify that. If negative a sample from the lesions (biopsies) is needed. Antibiotics may be needed. I would recommend to discuss these options with your veterinarian.

Ouch, that must be very painful to Frankee and the kitten. There are a couple of reasons why they may have both developed these ulcers, and they include nutritional (protein - calorie malnutrition, riboflavin deficiency), infection (FeLV, FIV, calicivirus, herpes virus), toxins, foreign body, or electric cord shock. I would take them both into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam, as it's concerning that they are both showing the same symptoms. It will also be painful for them to eat, and cats should not go long without eating or they end up at risk of developing a fatty liver. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and any other tests they deem necessary. Once a cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment with you. I would offer them both gently warmed wet food tonight to tempt them to eat.

I am sorry to hear that Sweety has a painful mouth. Unfortunately, gingivitis/stomatitis in cats can be very severe and quite debilitating. It can be made even worse in cats that have other immune issues, such as allergies or FeLV/FIV infections. Antibiotics and immune-suppressive medications can be used in mild cases. Thorough dental cleaning will help many of these cases more than just medical treatment. However, many cats will need all or most of their teeth pulled to ease the pain. The pain and inflammation is caused by an immune reaction to the tartar. Since we can't completely prevent tartar build up on the teeth, often removing the teeth is our only option. Obviously this is quite a bit more expensive than a simple teeth cleaning. I recommend discussing your options with the veterinarian that has treated Sweety as far as medications or financing for the dental cleaning. Unfortunately ulcerated tumours are incredibly painful and analgesia will do little to help. If it cant be removed and cant heal you have limited options. Personally I would consider quality of life carefully and consider euthanasia. Othet management options would be to try orobase cream which makes a protective film over the open area and alleviates pain, but the cat would have to be amenable to you applying it. You could consider having an oesophageal feed tube placed so you can bypass the mouth completely whilst it heals. These tubes are usually temporary but there are linger term versions that allow you to put feed into the stomach directly. Consider carefully though as quality of life should be the overall deciding factor.
