My cat has diarrhea. What can I do to help his upset stomach?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Hello, Lio had diaherra for three days once a day (brown and mushy), I did give him salomn oil around the time this started but stopped using it. I ordered a probotic but what can I do for now? He is on a mix diet, tiki cat sardine and salomn sweet potatoe kibble Iandloveanyoubrand. There wasnt a real change in his diet beside the salomn oil that one time. He is till eating well but should I try boiled chicken and brown rice and if so for how long and how much and do I have supplements/FIBER?

You can try home made diet and probiotics for a week. GI distress from new food or treats generally only lasts a few days. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, or he becomes uninterested in food, I'd recommend taking him to see his vet for a physical exam.

As long as he's not vomiting and is acting fine and drinking water, you can try a bland diet. I recommend either boiled chicken, scrambled eggs, or low fat cottage cheese. If that doesn't help to improve his diarrhea or you notice vomiting, lethargy, etc. he should be seen by a veterinarian.

I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.

I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed.

Congrats on your new cat! A bland diet of chicken will typically help diarrhea if it's caused by an upset stomach or GI illness, but because it didn't, it is more likely due to something else. Zues may actually be suffering from intestinal worms, which is a common cause of diarrhea in cats. I would take him into the vet today for an exam along with a sample of his feces. The vet can examine his feces for signs of worms, and can prescribe a deworming treatment for him.

My 9-year-old cat has diarrhea and is losing weight. How can I help?

If this was caused by a food change I would expect him to be back to normal by now. There may be something else underlying going on here that is the cause of Zebco's diarrhea and weight loss, such as intestinal parasites, pancreatic disease, diabetes, or even thyroid disease. I would recommend taking him to your vet for a through examination and potential tests (bloodwork, fecal exam), to hopefully identify the underlying problem so that he is treated appropriately. In the meantime I would suggest feeding Zebco a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle his stomach a bit. You can also try adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to add fiber and help harden the stools up. Best wishes with Zebco and I hope he feels better soon.

Intestinal parasites are possible, even for indoor cats, as are some infections or diseases like colitis or inflammatory bowel disease. If the diarrhea continues for more than 24 hours or seems to be getting worse, or if her appetite does not improve during that time I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. They may treat her symptoms or recommend some testing like blood work or a fecal analysis depending on what they find during a physical examination.

My cats have chronic diarrhea, and vet medicine isn't helping.

I would recommend to try switching them to just a plain boiled chicken diet for a few days to see if this settles their stomach and add in some probiotics. I believe you can buy proviable paste online and give as directed. My concern though is that they may have a parasite or bacteria that they aren't finding in their fecal samples. If they aren't improving, contact your vet to see if you can either bring in just a fecal sample or deworm both of the prophylactically. I hope this helps!

You may want to try mixing a little bit of his old food in with the new food to gradually transition him to the new food. If he still doesn’t want to eat it you could ask your vet if there are any other foods to try for his condition.
