What litter and ointment are safe for my cat after declaw surgery?

Their dust free paper non-clumping kind would be okay. The main objective is to use a litter that is less likely to get into the small incisions on her toes in case there is an open area. Any traditional clay or clumping litter is NOT recommended. Litter in the form of pellets that don’t break apart is what you are looking for. You can also use shredded paper. Use only shredded paper or a paper litter called “Yesterday’s News” for the 14 days after surgery. Crystal Litter may also be used, however if the paw is not wrapped or bandaged, I would stick with paper litter.

I would recommend using shredded paper in her litter box instead of sand or litter if she has infected toes. Do not apply topical medication. If she is licking her feet excessively she may need an e-collar or something to help prevent her from licking. There are no human over-the-counter pain medications that are safe to use in cats, so I would definitely recommend calling your vet to let them know that she is still painful. He/she can prescribe a safe and effective pain medication for you to give at home for the next few days, such as gabapentin, buprenorphine, or tramadol.

I'm so sorry to hear about Quincy's traumatic event! I would try to avoid a typical clumping litter until his paws have healed a bit more, as the dust and tiny debris can get lodged into the wounds on his paws and make matters worse. Since he won't use the Yesterday's News, you can also try simply using shredded paper or another pelleted litter. Mild oozing can be seen post declaw, but if it continues to bleed for more than a few hours, its best to contact your vet to inform them of what is going on. That white stuff there in the photo looks like skin glue, which is commonly applied to the incision site. Increased pain and limping 5days after surgery may indicate infection in the wound, and she needs to be assessed by a vet for pain relief and possibly antibiotics. Given she has had an anesthetic, surgical trauma and pain and post operative medications the risk of any additional treatment to kittens would be minimal
