My cat vomits daily, B12 deficient, but seems healthy. What to do?

Hi. There are many possible causes for vomiting from primary GI to secondary GI causes. If blood work or x-rays didn't get us many answers, I would move forward with an ultrasound as that much vomiting isn't normal. I would also recommend asking your veterinarian for a prescription bland diet during this time. Good luck

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry you are having trouble with Nigel and that he is sick. Vomiting in cats can be very difficult to diagnose the underlying cause, and often require many tests and treatment trials to find the answer. I would recommend working him up for either food allergies, or IBD. IBD would require a biopsy to diagnose. A scope is recommended as well for this. The other thing you could trial first is a diet trial for food allergies. Diet trials are very tedious and difficult to perform, as you need to feed the diet for 8 weeks, and have that the ONLY food that goes into Nigel, including medicated chews. You start with a diet like Hill's z/d or Hill's hypoallergenic. If the vomiting improves, then you slowly add in foods, one at a time, to determine what causes the allergy. Just switching foods for a week or two will not tell you if it is a food allergy. Discuss these options with your vet. If these don't work, then I would recommend a consult with an internal medicine specialist. Best of luck with Nigel!

It is not normal for a cat to vomit that frequently, so your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease or another type of chronic gastrointestinal disease. Since it has been going on for so, a diet change may not be enough at this point. The ideal situation would be to have your veterinarian do some testing to determine what is causing the vomiting. If that is not an option, then I would discuss treatment options with your veterinarian. There are a number of medications that may be able to resolve the vomiting. Good luck! Chronic vomiting could be due to kidney failure, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism and many more medical conditions. i would recommend having a blood test doe at your vet's, this should help revile what is causing this.

Chronic diarrhea in an older cat with vomiting can be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal cancer. The only way to differentiate between the two disease is a surgery to take biopsies of the intestines and have them analyzed. Based on the diagnosis, the diet may be changed or vitamin supplements or steroids may be added to manage her symptoms. They will check for parasite and check her labs for any renal or endocrine disease

With Sasha's age and the consistent vomiting, I am concerned that she may have something systemic going on. Quite commonly I see kidney disease in older cats and this can cause consistent vomiting. There are also other conditions such as GI inflammatory disease that can lead to persistent vomiting like you are seeing. My best recommendation would be to have a veterinarian examine Sasha and have her blood tested to start with. This will help rule out multiple potential causes of what you are seeing. Poor Kika! With the time frame in mind it sounds like she is having issues towards the end of digestion. This could be to do with her stomach pH being off or being overly sensitive, or could be due to the liver or pancreas etc. If her blood panel is normal and the ultrasound didn't show any structural abnormality in the stomach then I suspect it is a functional problem. I would suggest trying to feed her a food for sensitive stomachs such as gastrointestinal. I would also feed her earlier so she has more active time to digest. If this doesn't improve the situation you could try a medication such as tagamet to line and settle the tummy. Failing that tests would have to be repeated and possibly her stomach would need to be examined endoscopically.
