My cat has a cut near his rectum. Is it serious? Should I spray it?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Hi! Mario has a weird looking gash next to his rectum. I haven’t noticed till now and was wondering could it have been from something outside or is it something serious? I have antibacterial cat wound spray should I spray it?

Ouch! it's possible that Mario has been licking or chewing the spot, which is why there is a cut there now. I would definitely keep the area clean and dry and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on him so he can't lick the wound or the wound spray you place on it. I'd also look for any signs of irritation in addition such as parasites, red skin indicating allergies, etc that may help you determine what caused the wound.

If the area is very bothersome, is affecting his ability to go potty, or it's hot to the touch, growing in size, or oozing pus or debris, then it is best to seek out veterinary care in person as they can indicate something more serious such as an infection or injury to the anal glands/rectum that needs treatment.

Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. Given current events, you may need to drop him off at the clinic then wait for your veterinarian to call you to discuss exam findings and treatment options.

My cat has painful, recurring skin wounds leaking fluid. Why?

These sound like wounds from being in a bad fight with another cat. It’s best to have these treated by your veterinarian if you can. In the meantime clean each wound with hydrogen peroxide and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. I’m concerned about the ones around his anus. There may be a tear in the rectum that may be very serious and need a veterinary exam to determine if the feces are coming out the wound. If so this could cause more infection and may need to be stitched closed. Antibiotics will help these wounds heal more quickly also. My cat has a painful anal sore and is straining. What should I do?

That dark discoloration implies that top skin no longer has blood supply and it is not healthy tissue. This is likely an abscess from an injury or previous bite wound. Typically they can heal on their own, but the bacteria get trapped and cause this. She will need to see a vet for further treatment as that spot may have to be surgically removed and the area cleaned and flushed out. Antibiotics need to be given to maintain control of the infection so it can heal. These areas are very painful so any touching or straining is not recommend.

Without a photo it is difficult to give much advice other than you should clean it with warm water and mild soap. Dry the area and apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream. Do this 2-3 times daily until healed. If after a couple days it is not improved or worse then you need to Molly to your vet for an exam. My cat has a belly cut and I can't get to a vet. What should I do?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). The area should be shaved first and washed profusely with clean water. Disinfection can be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Sudocream or zinc oxide cream can be applied on the wound after cleaning and drying it up. Keep him indoors and keep in touch for updates.
