What can I put on a skin sore or irritation near my cat's butt?

Congrats on your new cat! I would not continue to clean the area with peroxide as it actually damages tissues and interferes with wound healing. You can clean the sore with warm water and antiseptic soap. Put an Ecollar on Maggie to keep her from irritating it, and I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Keep an eye on the sore, and if it becomes red, swollen, warm to the touch, or you see pus, then I would be concerned because it's infected. Hello! Yes, cats that are overweight often get an infected rash in this area. Cats have trouble grooming this area when they are overweight. If the area is sore and infected looking, it is much better to take Carmen in to see her vet to have the area checked. Your vet can likely prescribe a cream to use topically. At the clinic, they will likely be able to shave and clean the area fully, and this will help things to heal up normally.

Hello from across the pond! I would try and keep it clean by washing the lesion with a mild soap and water. Nothing else to keep from irritating the wound further. From the pictures you posted, it does look like there is a bit of yellow discharge coming from the wound indicating an infection. You vet may prescribe antibiotics when you see him/her soon.

Ouch! it's possible that Mario has been licking or chewing the spot, which is why there is a cut there now. I would definitely keep the area clean and dry and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on him so he can't lick the wound or the wound spray you place on it. I'd also look for any signs of irritation in addition such as parasites, red skin indicating allergies, etc that may help you determine what caused the wound. If the area is very bothersome, is affecting his ability to go potty, or it's hot to the touch, growing in size, or oozing pus or debris, then it is best to seek out veterinary care in person as they can indicate something more serious such as an infection or injury to the anal glands/rectum that needs treatment.

I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly.
