My cat coughs, burps, or hiccups after eating. Is it serious?

It is possible that Susie may be regurgitating which could be due to a disease called megaesophagus which, although more common in Siamese, can occur in other cats. If Susie does have megaesophagus, she will need to be examined by a veterinarian who will be able to discuss treatment options with you.

He may be eating too fast. My cat does this sometimes. Try feeding small amounts during the day or you can use a slow feed bowl which makes it harder to gobble the food. I think your theory makes some sense - it's possible that some oral pain is changing his behavior when he's eating. It is also not unusual for some cats to eat their food too quickly, and some cats do better with dry food as compared to wet or vice versa. The burping however sounds more like he might have some stomach upset. This could be from a food sensitivity, parasites, or something like inflammatory bowel disease. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination and to discuss testing if indicated.

If feeding smaller portions and more frequent meals has not helped, this could potentially be a hairball problem. I would recommend a product such as Laxatone and give this 3-5 days of treatment to see if there is a difference. Sometimes, stress or anxiety can lead to hiccups, so using a product such as Feliway (which you can find online or at your local pet store) can sometimes help and put an end to the hiccups. If the hiccups are still there after trying these methods or they become more distressing for Jicky, I would recommend taking her in to be seen by a veterinarian for an examination so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. But you first have to differentiate whethere whether Coix is vomting (obvious retching and forceful expulsion) or regurgitating (undigested food just seems to come out without much effort). Vomiting can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, megaesophagus (typically causes regurgitation), a parasitic infection (not as common), or even an underlying congenital disorder. Most of these conditions are treatable. You should first start with some diagnostic testing to gather more information on your specific pets condition. Then we will know what needs to be done for Coix to help control his vomiting episodes a bit better. In general, you can continue to feed smaller portions and go with an easily digestible diet such as limited ingredient diets (i.e. Iams, Purina, Evo). This is something you can easily start while awaiting a proper vet visit and diagnostic work-up for Coix. A canned diet is perfectly fine to feed Cameo. If she stops eating completely for more than 2 days, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. The cough can have multiple causes including allergies, infection (bacterial, fungal or viral), parasites, asthma or even heart disease. Ideally, she should be seen by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause. If this is not possible and she is behaving normally otherwise, then monitor for a worsening cough, lethargy, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance. These are symptoms that will need to be addressed by your veterinarian.
