Is Clavamox or Clindamycin safer long-term for my cat's skin?

My cat Callie is much better after a very bad skin infection. Doc put her on Clindamycin long term. Wondering if you think this safe due to esophagus trouble it causes? She was on Clavamox which worked good too. Would Clavamox be better long term then this drug? He only switched to Clindamycin because it’s what he had in stock for longer term as she was on liquid Clavamox which is only a week at a time. Said he can get the pills of Clavamox if I wanted him to. Wondering which is safer long term.

I personally would use clavamox long term if it’s effective. Yes, there are less side effects. Then you can keep the clindamycin to use at some point in the future, if needed. Clavamox now comes in flavored chewable pills which seem to be very palatable. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Callie.

They are safe to use together however clavamox has a high rate of causing nausea/loss of appetite too. Of course consult with your veterinarian as I do not know what condition your little baby has and one of or both of those may be uneccesary. I believe it is a safe antibiotic and does a good job for animals with urinary tract infections. I would continue the clavamox as prescribed by your Vet. Is it okay my vet cut & crushed my cat's Clavamox pills for storage?

Yes, long term storage out of the foil would be a problem but for the short course of treatment they should be fine. They now have clavamox in chewable tablets that are easy to break and most pets love the taste. My kitten has URI. Is clindamycin effective or are there better meds?

This is not the antibiotic of choice for URI in cats, the most suitable antibiotics for this condition at this are are Zhitromax and Veraflox. doxycycline should never be given to a kitten this young and clavamox is usually much less effective for URI in cats.

I'm not sure exactly what is going on with your kitten, but Clavamox is given to treat many different types of bacterial infections, such as ones of the urinary tract. If your kitten is really dehydrated, bacteria can build up due to him not passing urine, leading to an infection. That may be why your vet prescribed the Clavamox.

My cat got double Zeniquin & Clavamox. Should I worry about overdose?

It's a good question, but rest assured the safety margin for using Zeniquin is high - this means that you are not likely to see any issues by giving Leopold an accidental extra dose tonight. I would suggest that you continue by using the Clavamox every 12hrs, and repeating the next dose of Zeniquin tomorrow evening. It is best if both meds are given around mealtime - they are less likely to cause nausea and vomiting if given with a meal. Please feel free to ask any additional questions.
