My cat has CKD and anemia. Is his darbepoetin dose too high for him?

Using EPO is definitely an option since your cat is so anemic. Over time, some cats will develop resistance but I have had good success with using EPO. Talk to your vet about the exact protocol and if he/she thinks it is an appropriate option for your cat. I am not sure of his kidney values but it definitely might be the best option to improve his anemia and increase his quality of life.

I would have your Vet get a urine sample and a blood pressure. This will help stage Ike's renal disease. Prescription renal diets are highly recommend to slow progression of disease. Blood pressure medications should be used if high. I wish you the best!

That would be like prescribing the medication to the pet, which is illegal without seeing her in person. It's also against the user terms of the site. Hi there. Unfortunately, it's not likely that liver or any other food will make much difference in his red blood cell count. Anemia in chronic kidney disease is due to the body not producing erythropoietin, which is the hormone that drives the production of new red blood cells. This type of anemia can be treated with erythropoeitin injections, so I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about this option. I have had several kitties with chronic kidney problems and anemia who responded well to this treatment.

Doxorubicin is a very effect chemotherapy drug but, with all medications, there can be side effects. Since your vet knows your cat's entire medical history, he/she is the best person to guide you with advice on the best treatment regime for your cat. I am assuming that your vet believes that this drug is needed to help treat your cat's cancer and the benefits outweigh any risks associated with the drug. Your vet will need to monitor his kidney values closely for any changes while taking the drug and discontinue, if needed. So sorry that your cat has a tumor and I really hope that he goes into remission.

Hello. It is difficult to comment on Beau's kidney function because there is some vital information missing. I would need to see his BUN value, an SDMA analysis, & a urinalysis. SubQ fluids are always a good idea for cats with kidney insufficiency, but without the urinalysis, I cannot say if there is any azotemia ( a term used to describe kidney function abnormalities ). The same goes with the Azodyl, which may help pets with azotemia. With a creatinine of 2.5, & according to the International Renal Interest Society ( IRIS ), Beau's kidney insufficiency is a class 2, or mild, but we really need to see the SDMA to truly classify things. If his T4 is indeed 1.0, I would definitely decrease the methimazole, only you do want to keep the doses the same morning & night. Your vet should recheck the T4 in 2 weeks to see if the Methimazole needs to be decreased further. If the prednisolone is helping the bronchitis, then it is not necessary to stop it. His liver is perfectly fine, & depending on the dose, it too may be titrated down to the very lowest dose to keep him comfortable & control his symptoms.
