My cat gave birth to stillborn kittens. How do I care for her now?

Go ahead and gently clean the sac off of the kitten. You may need to tie off the umbilical cord if Mom is not attending to it. (Normally she will chew it off.) you can use a warm hand towel from the dryer to clean the kittens and stimulate them. Mom may not show interest in nursing until she is done delivering. I recommend you have Mira seen by a vet immediately in case she has any more kittens stuck in her birth canal, or in case she has an infection in her uterus. If either of these are the case, they could be life threatening. If not, then the vet can help determine if she needs further care for whatever else may be going on with her. Hello. I am so sorry to hear the kittens died. There could be a few causes including a viral infection, parasites, poor milk quality, premature birth or a congenital issue within Peaches that made it so the kittens did not form properly. Peaches will be ok. Be sure to give her plenty of attention and stick to a routine. Her milk will dry up within a week or so. Do monitor her teats for any signs of infection like redness or pain. I recommend to have Peaches spayed within 8 weeks from the birth. Having a cat spayed has many health and behavioral benefits. Additionally, 1 female cat can have almost 30 kittens in a year if not kept indoors and away from male cats. That's a lot of kittens/cats to care for. Not to mention hundreds of thousands of cats and kittens are destroyed every year because there are not enough homes. I hope this helps and my condolences.

A vet visit is always recommended in these cases so that is my suggestion - get her to a vet for an exam. If you don't want to take her to the vet just yet then monitor her closely for any signs of illness (not eating/drinking, lethargy, vomiting, hiding, etc). If you notice anything abnormal, then get her to the vet ASAP. She may have only had one kitten - there may not be any others. Please consider having her spayed as soon as you can. If they have stillborns they will usually continue to do so.

It could be that Shiver has more kittens that still need to be born, but without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. It's concerning that three have been stillborn, and I would be worried there's something wrong and she needs help giving birth. My advice is to take her into a vet immediately to be checked out. The only way to be sure there are no kittens left is for your veterinarian to do an exam and likely an x-ray of her belly to make sure there's no kittens still present. It maybe she only had one kitten. But it is also possible she's not wanting to eat because she could be having complications of labor. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam to make sure there are no further issues.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The placenta can be passed before, after or with the kitten. Sometimes animals eat the placenta before we notice. I would assume it passed. If she isn't eating, lethargic or has a fever she should be seen by a Vet. I highly recommend doing so regardless to see how many more kittens are left and discuss spaying her in the next 4-6 weeks before she comes in to heat again. I wish you the best!
