My cat just had kittens. Why isn't she cleaning them or letting them nurse?

Ensure the mother has cleaned their noses and nothing is obstructing their breathing. Half n Half will do it, generally isn't not something humans do for kittens. Cats are pretty self sufficient, and will birth alone and do the aftercare themselves. I would leave her be to take care of it :-)

The kittens appear to still be in their individual amniotic sacs. An inexperienced or first time mother may not know to remove them from the sac. They may have been stillborn or could have died shortly after birth. Have Azula examined by your veterinarian to confirm no more kittens remain inside. Her milk will not come in or will dry up without kittens to nurse. You can bathe her or use pet wipes or unscented baby wipes to clean her up. Consider having her spayed in a few weeks to prevent a recurrence or accidental/unwanted litters in the future.

Hi there and thanks for posting. Kittens can get very cold very easily especially when they are wet and not dried off properly. It appears you are trying to keep them clean and dry which is good. A warm clean towel can help dry them off if they get wet. What is also concerning is if the kittens are not nursing regularly. Very young kittens need to be nursing every hour or so. You may need to get some milk replacer from your local pet store and hand nurse the kittens if mom is distant from them. I hope this helps!

It is best to use gloves and to handle her as little as possible. So a quick towel change is ok, then allow her to nurse her kittens uninterrupted, because too much handling can lead to complications.

Poor Kittens. You can try to clean them up and take them to her with the rest of the kittens. If she still rejects them then I would try to start bottle feeding them with KMR kitten formula. You would need to feed them every 2-3 hours. You can use a syringe or a kitten bottle. You will also need to stimulate their rear ends using a damp warm cloths after each feeding to help the pee and poop. Some cats are poor mothers and will reject their kittens, while others will reject a kitten because they know it's sick and not going to make it. It can take time for a mother kitten attend to their kitten, and I would leave her and her kittens alone for 30 minutes in a room. Come back and see if she has groomed them, and/or started to feed them. If she has started bonding with them, then it's fine. If there is no evidence that she has started taking care of them, then you will have to feed them yourself. This requires a kitten formula and bottles.
