Why does my cat have brown penis discharge after antibiotics?

It would be best to have your vet recheck this. Pyo can be a concern at any age. Even if the dog hasn't had a heat before. They can also have very severe UTIs which can be resistant to certain types of antibiotics. It would be best to do a culture of the discharge to make sure the medication you are giving is working and that you know exactly what type of infection you are dealing with. It does look like he could have urine scalding around his rear end, it looks in the photo like the fur is wet underneath the red area? I would worry is he sitting in a soiled litterbox or wet area. We don't normally see the fur around the rear end getting soaked with urine in a cat. I would be sure that all the litterboxes are cleaned daily so he isn't sitting in a wet area and also would recommend getting an e-collar for him to stop him from licking the area (they can lick at the penis if they are having cystitis so maybe this is the case). I would bathe the area so there is no more urine present and dry with a hairdryer set on cool and put on an e-collar. I would let your vet know about the issue and they may want to prescribe a topical antibiotic or steroid ointment to use (if you have the dermalone, they may feel this is ok), or just monitor the area closely after bathing and putting on the e-collar.

As your cat is spayed, it is possible that the discharge you are seeing is coming from the urethra rather than the vagina as both open up into a common vestibule in the body. Dark brown secretions may indicate blood or infection in the urine, and bringing in a sample of your cat's urine to your local vet can be used to determine if this is the case. You may see other signs of illness such as more frequent trips to the bathroom, attempting to go without success, yowling, or pain and irritation. Infections are usually treated with a round of antibiotics as well as switching to a urinary friendly diet. Increasing your cats water consumption will also help reduce further infections. In some very rare cases, part of the uterus can be left behind during a spay which may become infected. Signs of infection include swelling of the abdomen, extreme pain and lethargy, and greenish or yellow discharge in addition to other possible discharge. This is a serious condition which should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

Since cabbage is not neutered the discharge could be semen, smegma and other seminal fluids. If the discharge is bloody or appears like pus or if his urine is not clear, you will need to take him to your vet for an exam. He may then be suffering from struvite crystals or an infection.

I would be concerned that Miss kitty has a uterus infection if the discharge is from her vulva. A urinary tract infection can present the same way too. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure nothing more severe is going on.

There can be several causes for what you have shown in the picture, including infection, cancer, bleeding/clotting disorder, trauma, or foreign body (something stuck in the pouch between the skin and penis that is rubbing). If the antibiotics that your vet described several days ago have not made any difference, then I recommend that you take Hugas in for a recheck examination. It may be that the bacteria did not respond to that particular antibiotic, or that the problem is not caused by bacteria and another treatment should be discussed.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Antibiotics for a UTI can take a few days to clear up the infection. I would recommend monitoring him for another few days. If it doesn't clear up by that point then I would suggest having him re-checked and a sample of his urine being sent away for a culture and sensitivity in case the antibiotic is not the right one for the infection that Brownie has.
