My goat is pushing something out of its anus. What's happening?

A rectal prolapse requires veterinary attention. Your veterinarian may cleanse and reduce the prolapse and suture it in place. There is usually an underlying cause (parasites, diarrhea, etc) which should be diagnosed and treated to prevent recurrence.

I would recommend that you have Sweetums examined by the vet. You have described a rectal prolapse, which can be caused by intestinal parasites, irritable bowel disease, diarrhea or constipation, etc. Some pets with chronic rectal prolapse require a surgery to tack the colon to the body wall to keep it in place. If it prolapses too long, it can become ulcerated or infected, which would require surgery to remove the affected portion.

Please, take Ushi to your local vets for an appointment. Mild, partial rectal prolapse is usually treated with medications to soften up stools, while more severe cases need surgical treatment. Fully clinical examination should suffice to make the definite diagnosis and recommend the best treatment for Ushi.

Rectal prolapse in a lamb usually requires treatment and correction by a veterinarian. In some cases, the lamb may need to be euthanized if the prolapse cannot be corrected, leads to infection, or continues even after treatment. Lambs that have tails docked too short, or that are experiencing illnesses that cause diarrhea or coughing may also have a higher incidence of prolapse. Treatment usually involves fixing any underlying health issues that may be causing the prolapse, injections to reduce swelling/retain the rectum better, or rings to hold in or amputate affected parts of the rectum. It would be best to contact a vet to come out and take a look, especially if this has continued or home treatment hasn't worked.

Your puppy has a prolapsed rectum. The first thing you need to do is put some water on it to moisten it, then put a thick coat of vaseline on the pink area to keep it moist. I am afraid you will need to take this puppy to a vet as the vet will have to reposition the rectum back inside and then make a purse string suture around the anus to keep it from prolapsing again, yet leave enough space for feces to pass. This is a tricky job and easily botched by a lay person. So you should take this puppy to a vet.

I would definitely be concerned enough to call a vet out for this. If she was in labor, then you would have seen signs of this (swollen vulva, fluid discharge, etc.) and it would not cause them to act this debilitated. I recommend getting her seen by a vet as soon as possible, so they can determine what the problem is. I hope that helps and Blue gets better soon.

Hi there. Bloating in goats can be an emergency and will require veterinary assistance. If she is not eating or drinking, it is time to take her in. Depending on how bad it is-they may be able to pass a stomach tube or it may be surgical and require a puncture of the rumen to relieve pressure. It worries me that she is not urinating. This can happen if she is severely dehydrated but also in diseases like renal (kidney) failure (she is older) or she could have a blockage from urinary calculi.
