My 5-week-old puppy has pink flesh coming out of her butt. What is it?

Your puppy has a prolapsed rectum. The first thing you need to do is put some water on it to moisten it, then put a thick coat of vaseline on the pink area to keep it moist. I am afraid you will need to take this puppy to a vet as the vet will have to reposition the rectum back inside and then make a purse string suture around the anus to keep it from prolapsing again, yet leave enough space for feces to pass. This is a tricky job and easily botched by a lay person. So you should take this puppy to a vet.

That looks like she has an anal prolapse, which is when the anus is displaced outside the body. It will need to be put back into place and the best person to do this is the vet. It does not appear to be a traditional case of rectal prolapse. It could be an issue with the internal rectal muscles, or could be normal for her. I would have Daisy Mae checked out by a vet. They can do a thorough physical and neurologic exams, and x-rays to see if there is a congenital disorder. This will help you plan for her future and possibly start special exercises to strengthen her hind end.

It is a little difficult to say exactly what is going on with Daisy - she may have a recital prolapse (a condition where some of the tissue in the rectum actually comes out) or chronic irritation if she is scooting on carpeted areas. Scooting may be related to anal gland impactions, infections, or intestinal parasites. I recommend having Daisy seen by a vet as soon as possible because she is likely uncomfortable and the conditions above require treatment. I hope all is well!

That does look odd. As a guess, I would suspect an infection or perhaps a prolapse. I recommend to discuss with the veterinarian some type of anti-inflammatory or even an antibiotic. The vet should also preform a rectal exam to get a better idea of the anatomy of the anus. Make sure to keep the area from trauma so She may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times. She should also not drag her rectum on the ground (and if she does, keep her off rough surfaces). An omega 3 fatty acid supplement will not correct the problem but it may help to decrease inflammation and condition the skin. Prolapses sometimes require surgical correction. I can’t really tell from the photo but it looks like a possible rectal prolapse. I suggest you deworm this dog and use granulated sugar on the prolapsed tissue. That should shrink it so it goes back in. This happens from straining to defecate so feed soft foods that are easy to digest. You can use amoxicillin if you have it. Please, take Ushi to your local vets for an appointment. Mild, partial rectal prolapse is usually treated with medications to soften up stools, while more severe cases need surgical treatment. Fully clinical examination should suffice to make the definite diagnosis and recommend the best treatment for Ushi.
