My cat has bloody diarrhea. Should I be concerned before her shots?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would not give the vaccine if Kitty isn’t feeling well. If she has an infectious disease the vaccine will not prevent it from getting worse. Bloody stool could be from a virus, a bacterial infection, a GI foreign body, or parasites. Even if you have dewormed her, not all dewormers get every parasite. If the bloody stool continues I would recommend borrowing money to have her seen by a vet. Good luck and kisses to Miss Kitty!

This can commonly occur after intestinal parasites or stress from vaccinations. Your cat most likely need some antibiotics and possibly a probiotic to help get the gut health back to where it needs to be. Once this occurs the diarrhea should resolve. I hope this helps. Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.

It can be stressed related from the vaccines causing Moshi's diarrhea and bloody stool. Given that he's acting relatively normal, I wouldn't be immediately concerned. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If this does not help the diarrhea and bloody stool, or he develops other symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, and lethargy, then I would be concerned and take him into the vet. I would recommend you take your cat to the vet on Monday. They can do a fecal examination to rule out intestinal parasites and possibly an X-ray to rule out a blockage/foreign body. Your vet can also give you some medication to help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea becomes bloody and/or your cat starts vomiting as well then I would recommend getting him in to an ER vet to make sure nothing too serious is going on.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear Panda is having problems. Vomiting and diarrhea can be something simple like sensitivity to food or something more serious like a disease called panleukopenia. Vomiting and diarrhea is never normal in a kitten and should be investigated by a vet. Once the vet gets him healthy, then he can get his vaccines. he will need his FVRCP vaccine (which usually starts at 3 months), then a booster vaccine three weeks from that date. He should also be tested at the vet for feline leukemia and dewormed. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Small specks of red blood during a bout of diarrhea is not unusual as the delicate lining of the back passage can become damaged from straining. As long as he is bright and alert, eating and drinking it would be ok to leave him but if any lethargy, weakness or vomiting occurs he should be seen urgently by your vet. Be sure he is up to date with deworming medication as intestinal worms are a common cause of diarrhea in young kittens
