Why does my 2-month kitten have bloody, mucousy diarrhea after shots?

It could be due to the anti-inflammatory/pain contro medications he was on or even stress from the procedure. Monitor him closely for now. As long as she’s feeling fine and eating and drinking she should be fine. Please get her back on cat food and water only and this loose stool should resolve without treatment. When cats have bowel irritation they can pass small amounts of blood. If she’s not eating well, not drinking or the diarrhea lasts more than a day then please take her in for an exam and treatment. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would not give the vaccine if Kitty isn’t feeling well. If she has an infectious disease the vaccine will not prevent it from getting worse. Bloody stool could be from a virus, a bacterial infection, a GI foreign body, or parasites. Even if you have dewormed her, not all dewormers get every parasite. If the bloody stool continues I would recommend borrowing money to have her seen by a vet. Good luck and kisses to Miss Kitty!

She may have have something like coccidia or Giardia causing this issue, and those can take a while to treat. I'd take her back to the vet in the morning. Best of luck.

It can be stressed related from the vaccines causing Moshi's diarrhea and bloody stool. Given that he's acting relatively normal, I wouldn't be immediately concerned. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If this does not help the diarrhea and bloody stool, or he develops other symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, and lethargy, then I would be concerned and take him into the vet. It is very possible the blood is from the irritated colon. The colon gets irritated secondary to the diarrhea. You can try an over the counter probiotic to help good bacteria return to the colon and help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea does not resolve he needs to see a vet for possible stronger medications.

Even though you do not seen worms, it is possible that Cupcake still has gastrointestinal parasites causing her diarrhea with blood. GI parasites are one of the most common causes of diarrhea in kittens, and are easily treatable with deworming medication from your veterinarian. Other possibilities include viral infections and/or dietary indiscretion (eating something she shouldn't have). Regardless, I recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian so he/she can perform an analysis of her feces to determine if and what parasites are present, and prescribe the appropriate treatment. I do NOT recommend purchasing products from either a pet store or food store, as these medications are not regulated and/or proven to be safe and effective for use especially in young kittens.
