Why does my cat have black eye boogers and painful, irritated eyes?

This is common with a certain type of eye infection in kittens. A drop of dye will be placed on her eye to look for a defect. Based on these results, treatment can be prescribed. Your poor kitty! That looks very painful. Your kitty needs to see a vet soon for this problem. Cat scratches to the eye can be very serious. All that is visible in the photo appears to be inflammed conjunctival tissue. This may be the primary problem or more likely something is going with the eye or structures associated with the eye/orbit. Upper respiratory disease is very common in kittens and often times the eyes can be a target of infection for the various viruses and bacteria that are associated with feline URI's. I always stress the important of getting eye problems seen immediately and early since the eyes are very important sense organs and they can deteriorate rather quickly. Your vet can examine the eyes, evaluate for the presence of an upper respiratory infection and then advise tests to closer evaluate the eyes themselves. This includes staining of the eye to look for corneal damage (outer surface), tear production, and measuring the pressure inside the eye. Often times we just stain the eyes and want to see the integrity of the cornea. Once a diagnosis is made of corneal scratch/damage or not, treatment can be advised. We use many different approaches for this disease. Oral antibiotics, Eye drops/ointments, nasal drops, L-lysine as a supplement since it affects viral replication, antiviral medicines, probiotics to enhance the gut immunity, deworming to decrease added stress on the kitten, and vaccines to try to boost the immune response towards these viruses. So I would make an appointment and see your vet today. You and Suga will feel better.

Oreo seems to have an infection. We cannot rule out a corneal ulcer just by looking at the picture. Cats often have upper respiratory tract infection, and develop conjunctivitis and I discharge because of it. Take Oreo to your veterinarian for a detailed exam that possibly will include staining the cornea to rule out ulcers. I forsee you will have to give eye meds at least twice a day or more depending on the physical findings. Since she does not want to hold it open, it may be an abrasions on the cornea from a previous foreign body such as a hair or a small scratch that is not big or deep. It can be from allergies or a mild respiratory infection that is early and just starting. You can flush the eye with saline eye drops and apply a warm compress if she will let you. If this does not get better in 24 hours or you notice further respiratory signs then I would get her checked by a vet as soon as possible

Sneezing and eye discharge make me suspicious of a viral infection, especially feline herpes virus. Herpes virus can cause a myriad of eye problems including ulcers, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as you don’t want the problem to get worse. I am so sorry to hear that Ichabod is experiencing these problems with his eyes. Thank you for providing an excellent picture, it seems slightly redx the third eye lid is protruding, and has discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Ichabod to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Him to scratch or rub hiseye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with cats, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments.
