My cat has a bald, flaky spot above his eye. Is it contagious?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 9.5 lbs

My cat has a small bald, flaky spot just above his eye. I noticed it about 24 hours ago. It doesn't seem to be bothering him. I am wondering if this is something that will require an in person vet visit or medication. What may have caused it? Does it appear contagious?

I would recommend a vet visit. There is a possibility that this could be ringworm which is a contagious fungal infection. It may just be a scratch or abrasion but the vet can look at it and determine if further testing or treatment is needed.

My best guess is that this is ringworm; very common in young cats. This can be contagious to people so you really need to get this figured out.

Other possibilities for this type of lesion would be: bacterial skin infection, mites/mange, fleas and autoimmune disorder (just to name a few). Many skin diseases will look the same grossly so it is hard to say what it is just by looking at photo.

My suggestion is to take Danny to your vet for an exam so he can get the appropriate treatment. Best wishes.

There are several things that could cause this. If it is in the location of a joint like an elbow then this could be a callous from laying on hard surfaces and nothing to worry about. Otherwise, this could be a fungal infection (ringworm), a bacterial infection, or simply allergies or dry skin. I would have your vet take a look at it so they can recommend the best oral meds if needed to help her improve. You could also try to bathe her with an oatmeal based shampoo to see if it improves. This does not look like a natural shedding and it does look suspicious for ringworm but a cut or abrasion can sometimes be this same circular shape. As you probably know, ringworm is contagious to humans as well. Ringworm can generally be diagnosed by your veterinarian and I recommend to get your kitty checked out so that you know what you were dealing with. Cat losing fur around eye with dry skin. Is it ringworm or infection?

I can't quite tell from the picture but based on your description one thing I would consider would be a fungal infection (ringworm). This is fairly common in kittens. Another possibility is a bacterial skin infection. I would make An appointment with your veterinarian so they can take a look at dusky's skin. There are very simple tests for ringworm if that is a concern for them (they can look at skin with a black light as a screen and can collect fur for a fungal culture) and they can prescribe medication as indicated.
