My cat ate calming treats. What if they ate too much L-tryptophan?

Hello, L-thryptofan (L-tryptophan- I believe it is spelled differently here) is an essential amino acid for cats. This means it must be present in her diet in some form because the body needs it to live. However, there's no need to give her any supplements or treats with excessive L-tryptophan if they seem to have a negative effect on her. It sounds like she was perhaps given a prescription diet for kidney disease that made her teeth hurt- there are prescription kidney disease diets that come in canned or wet form that may be easier on her teeth. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about trying these diets for her, as it will be the absolute best diet for her kidneys and urinary health. I would also talk to your vet about her teeth, because she may have dental disease or a tooth infection that makes eating any type of food difficult for her. In this case, your vet would recommend a dental cleaning and possible tooth extractions to make eating much easier for her. I hope this has been helpful. Fortunately, this is pretty safe, so while it's recommended to give those treats in moderation, I wouldn't be overly worried if Bug is acting normal. I recommend stopping the treats for a few days while Bug metabolizes what he's gotten, and then giving the treats according to the package guidelines going forward. Of course, if you are worried (or if Bug seems excessively sleepy or wobbly on his feet) then I recommend reaching out to your regular vet. But my suspicion is he'll do just fine! Hope this helps!

I think the worst that will happen is some mild GI upset like vomiting and/or diarrhea - both of which should be self-limiting (meaning they should go away on their own within 48 hours). If they don't, then he needs to see a vet. He may be more tired than normal but not comatose so if he is sleeping and you can't get a reaction out of him then you need to get him to a vet ASAP. I recommend no food for 8-12 hours but be sure he has plenty of water available. These treats don't really contain anything toxic at large doses but remember, every dog reacts differently to medications/supplements just like people so if, at any time, you are worried about him you need to have him examined by a vet.

While not an ideal main diet, there shouldn't be too much trouble with her eating this many treats, though she may have some mild intestinal upset, just feed her as usual and make sure she has plenty of clean, fresh water. If she does show any signs of illness, refusal to eat, vomiting, diarrhea, get her in to see your vet as soon as possible.

Hello. With one acute overdose of Lysine & DMG, you are most likely going to deal with the GI signs for a bit, & this will be mostly vomiting & diarrhea. The half life of Lysine is pretty quick, so it should be out of their bodies in a day or so. If the vomiting persists, you may need to take them in to your vet for anti-nausea medication & perhaps some fluids, so just monitor how they act over the next few hours. If they settle down, then they will be fine. If the vomiting remains persistent, then you should seek veterinary care. This is not the first time I have seen this with cats. This is about a 5-fold overdose for your cat. Please take her to your vet right away. He will have to make your cat regurgitate the capsule. At overdose with 20 mg/kg Clomicalm (5 times the maximum therapeutic dose), bradycardia and arrhythmias (atrioventricular node block and ventricular escape beats) were observed approximately 12 hours after dosing in dogs. Cats are usually more sensitive to medications, so this may be more toxic. Please take your kitty to your vet now.

A one time ingestion of this higher dose wouldn't be expected to cause any toxic effects. Your dog may be a little sleepier than usual. If he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, extreme lethargy or weakness then seek veterinary care.
