My cats ate Lysine chews, vomiting and thirsty. Should I call the vet?

Hi there. I would be concerned about a possible toxin ingestion or something along those lines if both of your cats are suddenly vomiting and having diarrhea. Pica-the term for a condition you have described for an odd craving for nutrients can be a sign of many things, and with multiple signs it is honestly best to see your veterinarian for further testing before proceeding. At worst, you may see some vomiting and/or diarrhea. If necessary, you can fast him for 12 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If symptoms persist or worsen, have him seen by your vet.

L-tryptophan is just an amino acid, a constituent of proteins. Excessive treats like these ones could cause vomiting and diarrhoea. If that is the case, as a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist more than 48hours or you notice lethargy or inappetence. If the medication had caused the vomiting, I would have expected it to cause vomiting days ago when you started it. That leads me to believe it is less likely related to the medication and more likely related to something else. That being said, double check that you are giving the correct amount and do shake the bottle well each time you give it. Just like in people, there are dozens of reasons vomiting occurs including: infection, dietary indiscretion (eating that piece of plant or human food, or dead mouse), GI foreign body (eating that hair band which is now causing problems), toxin, non specific nausea, diet change or new treat, and the list goes on. If it was just the three times in a row, I would just withhold food and water for 2 hours, then reinteoduce water. If she holds that down well, offer a small bit of food 8-12 hours after the last episode of vomiting. Don’t repeat tonight’s dose of medication. I am concerned in the back of my mind that something else is going on since her appetite had started decreasing. Is it related to the disease we are treating with the doxycycline or some other problem? Certainly if the vomiting continues or she is not ready to eat in the next 24 hours, or you see any new signs, please head to your vet or an emergency vet for re-valuation. I would err on the side of caution and get them seen today if you can, tomorrow, especially if they don't seem better. The vomitus looks like a hairball to me, but it's hard to tell. They may have overeaten, but unless that's something they already do, given the opportunity, I don't see that being as likely as something else, possibly getting into something they shouldn't have. Your vet will do an exam, possibly bloodwork, and maybe more//other diagnostics depending on what they find. Based on these results, your vet will have a better idea of what's going on and be able to recommend a treatment plan if needed.

Hello. I am concerned that a possible problem has occurred by the use of medication in his ear. Also, a cat on Lantus needs to eat. This is a situation where you should see your vet as soon as you can. L-lysine was thought to lessen the effects of some herpes related upper respiratory infections, but it has turned out not to be very effective. There is nothing about L-lysine that will be of benefit for Handsome at this time. You do need to see if there is some other underlying condition affecting him, & you do need to check his blood glucose in case his Lantus dose needs to be adjusted. I hope he is feeling better soon. Oh no, poor cats. They have to see a vet immediately. It's very serious they haven't eaten in 24 hours. If cats go long enough without eating, they will develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. Please take them into a vet now.
