My cat's kittens disappeared. Why is her belly big? Did she eat them?

My mom took in a stray cat. She had her kittens and gave them a home in my basement. The kittens now have hair and are walking. Probably a few weeks to a month old. My uncle was moving some boxes out of the basement, my mom took the cat from the basement and in her room. Then back to the basement.. a few days later the kittens disappeared but now the cats belly is big like she's pregnant again. Is it possible that she's eaten the kittens? And if so, what should we do?

It's likely that Princess has hidden the kittens in a safe place rather than eating them. The big belly is probably due to intestinal parasites, which are common in stray cats. Princess will need a deworming treatment from the vet, as will her kittens. I would try to find the kittens, and then bring Princess and her kittens into the vet for an exam and deworming treatment.
There is also a chance that her big belly is due to a medical illness, so I would recommend getting routine blood tests and a urinalysis done her on as well.

    I think that it would be unusual for her to eat her kittens but anything is possible. If any wild animals could get in the basement than another animal could have eaten the kittens, as well. If her stomach remains enlarged you should take her to your vet for an examination to determine the exact cause and best way to treat.

Mimi's stomach might still look big from the uterus being enlarged - it can take a little while for it to look normal again. If Mimi seems to be pushing still, if she seems uncomfortable or if you can feel a kitten moving in her belly then there would be more concern. I'm wondering if emergency veterinary services might still be available - you may want to try contacting your local health department to see. Unfortunately there's nothing I could recommend trying at home if there is a kitten still inside.

Why is my unspayed cat's belly swollen and she's peeing inside?
I see that Princess isn't spayed. I would be concerned that her accidents in the home and her distended belly is due to a pyometra. This is a life threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to become enlarged with pus. I would have Princess seen by a vet immediately. My recommendation would be to have a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose if she does have a pyometra. If she does, the recommended treatment is spaying her. Please take her into a vet now.

Check if she has milk in one or more of her teats. If so, it is possible she has kittens. When she comes to eat, catch her and take her to your vet for an exam. and then let her go again so she can go feed her kittens. She may have another problelm with her abdomen or she may have retained a kitten. So this is serious.

If the kittens were dead, then she would be very ill by now. There may be many reasons for an extended abdomen in a feral cat. She could have worms and should be wormed, or, she could be suffering from feline infectious peritonitis. or have a large tumor in her abdomen., If you can touch her and maybe catch her, if would be a good idea to take her to a vet for an exam, worming and vaccination. Your vet can determine whether she is pregnant or what other problem may be causing this.

Lilly is feeding kittens, and that uses a lot of energy. That could be the cause of her weight loss. I would feed her a kitten formulated food to give her extra calories. Make sure as well she is up to date on her deworming treatments, as intestinal worms cause weight loss and an enlarged belly. Best of luck.
