My cat ate chicken bones & skin. Is it bad? Should I see a vet?

That was naughty of Vurtue to eat that cup of chicken skin and fat! The good news is that in cats eating a lot of fat doesn't cause pancreatitis, but you could see some GI upset from eating all that food. If you do see any GI upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Silly girl, hope she's ok!

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about this situation. It's not recommended to induce vomiting because the bone could get caught in Furman's esophagus, and/or cause damage on the way up. You can only watch him to see if there are any problems from this ingestion. If you see any blood in his feces, he becomes anorexic, he start vomiting, there is blood in his vomit, he has diarrhea, and/or he becomes lethargic, you will need to take him into a vet immediately. It can take up to 72 hours for signs of an obstruction or perforation to appear, so watch him closely over this time. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Hello, unless he chokes on these bones he is not going to die immediately. Fortunately, chicken bones are digested readily due to their hollow make up. However, there is a chance that they may become entrapped in the small intestines and may cause damage to these. Over the next day monitor her for any vomiting, belly pain, or diarrhea. A small as the bone is, I suspect they will be okay. Cats are less likely to swallow bones in large pieces than dogs . I would keep an eye on them and take them in if they seem sick. In the meantime you can feed them some extra dry food to help bulk up the contents of their gastrointestinal tract to help any bone bits to pass more easily.

Cooked chicken bones are a bit more concerning than raw bones, as they are more likely to splinter as they pass through the gastrointestinal tract. Most bones (even cooked ones) can pass without a problem. Keep a close eye on Bonnie's overall energy level and appetite. Lethargy and inappetence can be associated with perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, as can vomiting or diarrhea, particularly if blood is present. WIth Bonnie's chicken allergy, I imagine that she's more likely to experience stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhea that may or may not be associated with the bones in the chicken breast. As Dr. Graben mentioned, she could also experience itchy skin due to her chicken allergy. If you notice any lethargy, loss of appetite, significant vomiting or diarrhea, or any blood in vomit or stool, then be sure to seek veterinary attention immediately. You can offer a bland diet of boiled lean ground beef or turkey, mixed with white rice for the next 5-7 days to try to give the chicken time to pass before mixing in her normal dog food over another 5-7 days.
