My cat ate chicken skin and fat. What should I do if she gets sick?

Hello, Fried chicken is not ideal for out pets due to the high fat content. The cooked chicken bones typically do not cause an obstruction but in some cases do. As far as the nuts go, I do not know of any nuts that have been reported to cause toxicity in cats. If Gizmo has not had any vomiting or diarrhea, I would not be alarmed. However, if he remains lethargic, vomits, develops diarrhea or does not eat in the next 24 hours, I would advise you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian.

Oh no it's not good that Kitty ate that vomit! At most, I would expect that eating this vomit could cause some GI upset, causing her to vomit and/or have diarrhea. It's good that it doesn't look like she has eaten the plastic bag, and if she ate the bag, I would be concerned that the bag could cause a foreign body obstruction. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you see any vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Pancreatitis in cats more commonly occurs due to concurrent diseases (such as inflammatory bowel disease, cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis, diabetes mellitus, etc.) than due to high fat diets. Dogs commonly develop pancreatitis after eating high fat diets, but this not been shown to be the case with cats. There are also many other cats that develop pancreatitis idiopathically (i.e. we never determine why it happens). One guess to try to associate Bella's pancreatitis with the diet change would be that she may have developed vomiting from a fairly rapid diet transition. The vomiting may have caused a back flow of bile into the common bile duct, which also empties into the pancreatic duct. When back flow of bile occurs, it can introduce bacteria through the shared duct to the pancreas. This may be a stretch of a theory, but is possible. Before changing Bella back to her old diet, I would recommend waiting for further test results to determine if other diseases are present and indicating the need for a different prescription based diet. Since she has been ill, I would also recommend discussing her diet with her vet and taking a full 5-7 days to slowly transition to any new diet. I hope that she does well!

Yes, rich and fatty foods for pets can cause vomiting and may even trigger problems such as pancreatitis which requires veterinary treatment. Cats can also eat until they're overfull if given too much at once. I would avoid giving any broth or extras that cause vomiting (and especially if he's overweight) and try to spread out his meals to 3-4 smaller meals throughout the day so he is still eating enough, but isn't able to gorge himself at once. If the vomiting continues, a workup from your vet is best.
