My cat ate brisket with garlic and scallions. Will she be okay?

Cat got a piece of brisket that had garlic and scallions on the outside. Is this enough to be poisonous to her?

Depending on how big the piece of brisket was, probably not - the toxic dose of garlic is about 1-2 whole cloves per kilogram. I'm not sure how much Millie weighs, but an average cat is normally around 10-11 lbs which works out to 5 kilograms. So she would have needed to eat around 5 cloves of garlic (and/or an equivalent amount of scallions, which are not as toxic) in order to cause any problems.

That being said - if you are concerned or have any doubts about how much she may have eaten, the safest bet is always to have her checked by a vet. If he/she has any concerns, they could go ahead and start treatment to try and prevent any problems.

    As little as one clove of garlic can lead to toxicity in cats. If the brisket did not have an entire clove of garlic on it, Millie should be fine. I would monitor her closely. It’s important to note that it may take up to two to four days after your pet eats garlic for symptoms to appear. Symptoms of garlic toxicity include breathlessness, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, pale gums, an elevated heart rate, an increased respiratory rate, weakness, exercise intolerance, and collapse. Millie may also lose interest in her food as a result of this garlic ingestion. If you see any of the symptoms I mentioned above, get her into your vet immediately.

I think your cat should be fine. They have to actually ingest the garlic and a clove in her water bowl should have shed enough material into the water to affect her. Of course, keep an eye out for any adverse symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite. If she displays any signs of illness, get her in to see your vet right away.

If it was only a small amount of garlic and onion powder your cats should be fine. Garlic and onion are toxic to cats but usually the dose that they can get from eating small amount of powder or seasoning is not toxic. I would suggest you to monitor your cats over the next 24-48hrs for signs of lethargy and inappetance. If they develop any worrying signs you should take them to your local vets.

It is likely Steve did not ingest a toxic dose. Monitor for lethargy, pale gums, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance for the next 24-72 hours. You may see some minor stomach upset which, in the absence of other symptoms, can be managed with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he develops any of the other symptoms, have him seem by your veterinarian.

I can understand your concern. Typically there isn’t enough raw garlic to be of concern when used in a condiment and especially if a small bite was consumed. Bonnie will likely be fine. If you want to be absolutely sure you can take her in for some bloodwork to check her organs and make sure everything looks good. Otherwise, just monitor her for the next few days for any symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite and get her seen right away by your vet if she becomes ill. That should not be an issue. It would be more common to see an upset stomach with diarrhea and vomiting after giving that type of meat to a cat. You should watch Lilly for the next 2 to 3 days for any bombing, diarrhea, weakness or belly pain. If she has any of those signs she should be checked out by a veterinarian.

I wouldn't worry about this. There's no way there is enough garlic powder in one slice of pepperoni to cause toxicity in an adult cat. As long as she is acting normal, I don't see a need to take her to the vet. I hope that helps and all is well with Mirz.
