My cat ate a little garlic residue from a beef stick. Will he be okay?

If it was only a small amount of garlic and onion powder your cats should be fine. Garlic and onion are toxic to cats but usually the dose that they can get from eating small amount of powder or seasoning is not toxic. I would suggest you to monitor your cats over the next 24-48hrs for signs of lethargy and inappetance. If they develop any worrying signs you should take them to your local vets.

Depending on how big the piece of brisket was, probably not - the toxic dose of garlic is about 1-2 whole cloves per kilogram. I'm not sure how much Millie weighs, but an average cat is normally around 10-11 lbs which works out to 5 kilograms. So she would have needed to eat around 5 cloves of garlic (and/or an equivalent amount of scallions, which are not as toxic) in order to cause any problems. That being said - if you are concerned or have any doubts about how much she may have eaten, the safest bet is always to have her checked by a vet. If he/she has any concerns, they could go ahead and start treatment to try and prevent any problems.

It is likely Steve did not ingest a toxic dose. Monitor for lethargy, pale gums, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance for the next 24-72 hours. You may see some minor stomach upset which, in the absence of other symptoms, can be managed with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he develops any of the other symptoms, have him seem by your veterinarian.

The very small amount of onion powder in this shouldn't cause your cat any problems. He may get some stomach upset due to getting a decent amount of unfamiliar food, but no more than that. If he should become ill, refuse to eat, etc, get him in to see your vet right away.

I can understand your concern. Typically there isn’t enough raw garlic to be of concern when used in a condiment and especially if a small bite was consumed. Bonnie will likely be fine. If you want to be absolutely sure you can take her in for some bloodwork to check her organs and make sure everything looks good. Otherwise, just monitor her for the next few days for any symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite and get her seen right away by your vet if she becomes ill. I think your cat should be fine. They have to actually ingest the garlic and a clove in her water bowl should have shed enough material into the water to affect her. Of course, keep an eye out for any adverse symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite. If she displays any signs of illness, get her in to see your vet right away.

Hi and thanks for your request. It is unlikely that this minimal amount of garlic can result in side effects and intoxication. FIV positive status should not increase the chances of this intoxication. I would monitor signs such as lethargy, inappetence, fast breathing and pale mucous membranes/palate. If any a check up will be required.
