My cat ate ants from his food bowl. Is this dangerous for him?

Any type of bug found in your pets food is best avoided. Ants themselves aren't harmful if accidentally eaten by your pet, but they potentially can remove some nutrients from the food. A good way to keep the ants out of the food supply is to place the food in a plastic container. Not only will this keep ants out but dust mites as well, which often cause food allergy symptoms in pets. Also leave out just enough kibble where your pet finishes the meal. That way no left-overs are still in the bowl to attract the ants.

Depending on where you live, the only concern with eating ants is if they are fire ants. Fire ants tend to cause significant irritation when they bite, so those bites can be problematic (although my previous dog ate them on a regular basis). White gums in any animal is concerning as it can be a sign of shock or anemia. Based on your attached photos, I would not be alarmed about the color of the gums. They are not pale, they are an adequate pink color. Unless you notice other changes such as weakness or lethargy or vomiting, then I would not worry and just monitor for further changes.

It's possible the pink coloration is gingivitis or it could also indicate an infection. The not eating could be related to dental pain but it could also be related to something else. I recommend to have Milo examined by the veterinarian. A physical exam is needed to begin the process of figuring out what's wrong and fixing it. I just checked out the information on the Combat website, and this is what is says: "The active ingredients in Combat products are either fipronil or hydramethylnon. These ingredients are fatal to insects, such as ants and roaches, but have been shown to have a very low toxicity in humans and domestic animals." I would rinse your cats's mouth out with warm water in case there is any gel left in there. I would monitor your cat to be safe. If you see any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, muscles tremors, convulsions, or lethargy, those can be signs of a reaction to the poison, and then I would take him into the vet immediately. There is no specific antidote, but he may need supportive treatment for his symptoms. You would see a reaction to this ingestion within a couple of hours, so if he's still acting normal by tomorrow, he will be fine.

The color can change with ambient temperature, with activity or when stressed (gets more pink). It can indicate anemia but cats that are anemic also have pale gums and act sick. If her nose still gets its normal pink color she is likely fine. My own cats nose does this. If you are unsure about her gum color, have your Vet check her to be sure. I hope this helps!
