My cat's gums are white. Is this color normal or should I worry?

Cat gums can normally appear more pale than you would expect on a dog. Also, pale mucous membranes is not a great indicator of anemia, because the color can be influenced by other factors such as blood pressure and environmental temperature. Pictures are not a great way to visualize colors, but this does not seem unusually pale to me. If you feel like you are noticing a drastic change in the color, then it is possible that something is off in her body, but not likely if she is otherwise acting normal. The conditions that cause pale mucous membranes would cause other clinical signs such as weight loss, decrease in appetite, and/or decrease in activity. I think you have little to worry about right now, but it's difficult for me to tell for sure without examining her. The best way to make sure she is healthy is to schedule a wellness exam with your vet. They will be able to help you further with this concern. I hope that helps and all is well with Kitty.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can be very normal in pink nosed cats! The color can change with ambient temperature, with activity or when stressed (gets more pink). It can indicate anemia but cats that are anemic also have pale gums and act sick. If her nose still gets its normal pink color she is likely fine. My own cats nose does this. If you are unsure about her gum color, have your Vet check her to be sure. I hope this helps!

What I see in the picture is a change in color where the gums meet the hair line. This is something I see just as cats age. Sometimes in orange cats the skin will become black in pigmentation. Other times you will see a blue color. I would just continue to monitor it for now. If it gets bigger to you can take Schmidt to the vet for a quick check but I do not think it was related to the dental

Each cat and dog is different, some have pigment of varying degrees inside of their mouth and some have almost none. So, good observation. In cases where there is significant pigmentation of the mouth, other areas of the body can be used to assess how pink they are. The inside part of the eyelids is a good place to check that. It's difficult to tell for sure without seeing it, but this is normally nothing to worry about. They can have natural pigment in their gums that increases with age. It would only be concerning if there were other problems associated with the gums turning black, like mouth pain, an increase in drooling, or other obvious issues. If Marty is otherwise normal, then I would not worry about it. However, it's best to ask your vet about this the next time he goes for an exam. I hope that helps and all is well with Marty.

White gums can be a sign of anemia or low red blood cells, dehydration, extreme pain or shock. While these conditions are serious, in general I would expect other signs as well. If Xena is her usual self I wouldn't be particularly concerned about her gum color. If she is lethargic, has a decreased appetite, or is vomiting or having diarrhea I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian if at all possible.

Hi Emerson! From the picture, the color of Bowie's gums look quite normal - nice and pink. In the future, when you're looking at her gum color, I find that it's easier to assess using the upper gums since the lips sit closer to the lower gums. Drooling in cats can be due to dental disease or pain, nausea, or the ingestion of something unpleasant (oftentimes different plants). If Bowie is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, and you can't find any plants or debris that she may have chewed on recently, there's no major cause for concern and you can continue to keep an eye on her at home. However, if she's lethargic, refusing to eat or drink normally, or starts to vomit, then you should seek veterinary attention. I hope that everything goes well!
