My cat's nose is white, but her gums are pink. Should I be worried?

It is pretty normal for a pink nose to change color. As the nose is a part of the body that is hairless and exposed, outside temperature and changes in blood circulation will show up as a color change. Dark pink means there is a lot of blood circulating through the nose, lighter colors mean there is less blood circulating. I would only be concerned if the nose is porcelain white with the gums also being white . This could point to anemia caused by parasites, a bleed or other causes of anemia and would need to be checked out by a veterinarian.

White gums in any animal is concerning as it can be a sign of shock or anemia. Based on your attached photos, I would not be alarmed about the color of the gums. They are not pale, they are an adequate pink color. Unless you notice other changes such as weakness or lethargy or vomiting, then I would not worry and just monitor for further changes.

Each cat and dog is different, some have pigment of varying degrees inside of their mouth and some have almost none. So, good observation. In cases where there is significant pigmentation of the mouth, other areas of the body can be used to assess how pink they are. The inside part of the eyelids is a good place to check that. Maybe not, however a change in the "pallor", or color of the surfaces of the inside the mouth, the nose (in a light-colored cat) or sclera (white part) of the eyes can indicate certain disease processes. I'd worry potentially about anemia, or lack of red blood cells, making your cat's nose look pale-r than normal. Anemia can have a number of causes including certain infectious diseases transmitted by fleas as well as autoimmune disease. The black dots are concerning as well, although without seeing a picture it's hard to say what those are. Bottom line - I think this is worth getting checked out by your vet, to be sure your kitty is normal.

Cat gums can normally appear more pale than you would expect on a dog. Also, pale mucous membranes is not a great indicator of anemia, because the color can be influenced by other factors such as blood pressure and environmental temperature. Pictures are not a great way to visualize colors, but this does not seem unusually pale to me. If you feel like you are noticing a drastic change in the color, then it is possible that something is off in her body, but not likely if she is otherwise acting normal. The conditions that cause pale mucous membranes would cause other clinical signs such as weight loss, decrease in appetite, and/or decrease in activity. I think you have little to worry about right now, but it's difficult for me to tell for sure without examining her. The best way to make sure she is healthy is to schedule a wellness exam with your vet. They will be able to help you further with this concern. I hope that helps and all is well with Kitty.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! For a kitten Noushmc's age the gums should be a light pink and the tongue should be pink (darker shade than the gums). If the gums are white that is an emergency and indicates a severe anemia. I hope this helps and have a great day!

I would not worry about that at the moment, as sometimes a nose can change color and become dry intermittently even nothing is wrong. However, monitor this condition and watch for sneezing, discharge from the nostrils or eyes. If this occurs, she needs to be examined by a vet as she may have a respiratory condition.
