This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. They are more rare in cats than in dogs, but not unusual. The best way to avoid them in the future is to increase the amount of fiber and grain in her diet. Since cats can be picky, it is best added by finding a formula with it built in.

This is a spontaneous thing that can happen in pets with anal gland problems, where the anal glands fill up and are not able to express normally. We think this is caused by an underlying allergy, which can be discussed with your vet. Sometimes giving your pet a high fiber diet can help prevent reoccurence. Peanut Butter needs to see your vet for a short course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine to help this wound heal properly. He may also need the anal gland to be flushed thoroughly while under a mild sedative. I would recommend scheduling an appt for him soon to get this taken care of. In the meantime, you can purchase an e-collar from your local pet store and place it on him to deter him from licking the area and making the inflammation/irritation worse. Poor guy. Unfortunately costs can vary quite a bit depending on what needs to be done. If it is a "simple" anal gland abscess that has already ruptured, then Coconut might just need antibiotics and pain medications. Again, costs will differ depending on if your friend elects to have injectible medications or if they decide to give oral medications at home. However, if the area is more infected, Coconut may have to be sedated to have the area flushed and explored. The only home care options are to "warm pack" the area with a warm wash cloth applied to the area for up to 5 minutes (as tolerated) and using an e-collar to prevent licking. Good luck! Hello. I would use the povidone-iodine, as the chlorhex. may make Bob sick if he ingests it. Dilute the iodine about 50:50 with water & flush things as best you can twice a day. Applying a triple antibiotic would be fine, & make sure you put some sort of Elizabethan collar on him to prevent excessive licking. The only real thing you can do at home is to "hot pack" the anal gland area. You can use a wet, warm wash cloth and hold it to the area for 5 minutes. Do it two to three times per day. If it doesn't help within 24 hours she should go back and see your vet again. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This looks like a ruptured anal gland, the medication she is currently on should help to prevent infection but you should have the other gland checked and emptied by your vet or vet tech to prevent the second from rupturing also. As long as the area is kept clean it should heal uneventfully, a high fiber supplement may help in preventing further recurrence
