My dog has an anal gland abscess. What can I do without a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My dogs anal gland is abscesses and we cannot afford to get to a vet right now, what can I possibly do to help my poor dog? Please some advice.

HI, this is Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear about Marlin.

The only thing you can safely do at home is warm compress the area, remove any scab that forms over the hole so it can drain and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. We do not recommend that you give any oral medications.

He really should see your Veterinarian for antibiotics and anit-inflammatories. they would also express the anal glands and make sure the other side isn't infected.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do at home to treat this condition. Marlin will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection. You can try to place a warm compress on the area 2-3 times a day for 10-15 minutes. This may help the swelling decrease and give your dog some relief. I would also try to prevent Marlin from licking at the area as well because this will further irritate the area. Once Marlin has healed from this episode you can take him to your vet every 4-6 weeks or so to have his anal glands manually expressed. This will help prevent the problem in the future. Good luck.

Hi, sorry to hear about Marlin. He needs to see a vet for this, if you cannot afford it you can try a warm compress using a wet washcloth for 5 minutes 3-4 times a day. You can apply a antibiotic ointment to the area after this. This will helps drain some of the abscess. He ideally needs to be on antibiotics. Gentle pressure after the warm compress will get out the discharge and hopefully provide him some relief. If this does not help, look into low cost clinics and care credit at their website. An abscess is by definition an infection and unfortunately there are no OTC or home remedies that can treat an infection. The best thing you can do is apply warm compresses that will hopefully help the abscess drain more effectively and heal by itself a little sooner. Of course, as with any infection, the best treatment would be antibiotics prescribed by your veterinarian.

No, I would have Marnie seen by a vet now. This is actually very painful to a dog, and dogs can be stoic about showing pain. Topical antibiotics will not help, she needs an oral antibiotic. Please take her into a vet now.

Yes, you can soak his rear end in a warm water/epsom salt bath or make a compress with a small washcloth soaked in epsom salt water and hold this under his tail several times daily until she gets home. This will help the area to drain, decrease pain, and help it to heal faster. Good luck!

My dog's anal gland abscess burst. Should I use antibacterial cream?

Hello, thank you for your question about Abby. If the abscess has already ruptured and you are able to warm compress the area, I would recommend allowing it to drain and do not feel that it needs any topical treatment. Abby should be discouraged from licking at the area as this will predispose her to developing a secondary infection. You could purchase an e-collar at a pet store or try using a t-shirt at home. After the holiday I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and relaying this information. They may recommend starting a short course of antibiotics at that time to help Abby heal quicker and prevent development of an infection. They can also consider pain medication at that time. My dog's anal gland abscess is swollen, no poop, no pain meds. Worried?

Anal gland fistulas are usually very painful. I would recommend going back and asking for several days worth of pain medication (do NOT give human ibuprofen or acetominophen as those can be deadly to dogs), and an Elizabethan collar if you don’t already have one one to prevent licking. Feeding just boiled rice and chicken for 2-3 days is an option (unless Mojo has a chicken allergy) to feed a low residue diet that will be less painful to poop out. Good luck!

My dog's abscess burst. What home care can I do before the vet?

Applying a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes a couple times a day can help the abscess continue to drain. cleaning the discharge from the skin with a mild soap or hibiclens (available at drug stores) is also recommended. An e-collar to prevent your dog from licking at the area and keeping your dog indoors except to use the bathroom is also recommended (to avoid flies). You will, however, need veterinary attention because the abscess may need to be flushed and your dog will need systemic antibiotic which requires a prescription.

This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. My dog's anal gland ruptured. Can it heal at home without a vet?

Don't panic! Yes this will heal on its own. What I recommend you do is make a warm epsom salt solution and soak her little bum in the solution several times daily until the swelling goes down. She is small enough that you could put a 1/4 c of epsom salt in a kitchen sink-sized basin and have her sit in this until the water cools. This does a great job of healing the hole and drawing out the infection and swelling.
