What food should my 9-month-old spayed cat eat: adult or kitten?

Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with the foods that are available in Turkey, but in general kitten food is higher in protein and fat for growing kittens. And as you found, a spayed cat will gain weight on that. I would suspect that a neutered cat food would be formulated to be slightly lower in calories than a regular adult cat food since their metabolism decreases slightly when a cat is neutered. That would be why Balim lost weight on that formula. If she is active enough to maintain her weight, I would supsect that a regular adult cat food is fine, but if she starts to gain too much weight, a neutered cat food may help prevent her from gaining weight as she gets older. Finally, we do not tend to see the same problems with the urethra in female cats that we do in male cats (but can see some bladder problems). Hi Ali! Thanks for using Pet Coach! I suggest you take her off the kitten food. Kitten food is very high in calories. I know that bag is labeled for up to one year but I usually recommend that kittens switch to adult food at 7-8 months of age. So, yes, adult indoor food would be indicated here. Also, do not just keep the bowl full - measure out the daily amount she needs based on the recommendations on the bag of food you are feeding; split into multiple small meals. Feed her to her ideal weight and not her current weight. Example: if she is 12 pounds and should be 9 pounds then use the feeding recommendation for a 9 pound cat. Always feed to the low end of the range the bag gives you especially since you are giving hearts and kidneys as well. Kittens until they are the age of 12 months should be fed a kitten food to support their growth needs. Each bag of food has a different daily allotment, so feed her according the instructions on her bag of food. After neutering, generally at the age of 6 months, in Leo's case 8 months, cats are still growing not yet reached their full size till around 12 months of age. For now I would recommend to stick to a good quality kitten food till a year old. But, many young cats gain weight beyond what they should gain after neutering so watch him if he is gaining more weight then he should then talk to your vet about adult cat food, some are specific to castrated/spayed young cats.

Yes, the adult food is a complete diet for all life stages. Usually kittens grow better with a kitten food as they do not have to eat as much to get the nutrients they need and the energy requirements. I usually feed kitten food until they are six months old then switch to adult food. Hi there. I would recommend feeding her a high quality kitten food until she is 9 months old. You can feed her canned food and dry food.
