Is there a safe way to apply Advantage to cats to prevent bald spots?

Advantage is very safe so you should be fine. You can take a damp cloth and wipe the area to remove some of it. It doesn’t matter where it’s applied, they recommend the neck so they can’t ,Ike it. Advantage treatment is a good start. If your kitty has flea allergies it is necessary to keep fleas from biting her. So: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian (Advantage is fine) and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust. Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas.

Hi! I'm still here! Sometimes it may take me some time to see a question, especially if I haven't been on in a bit. So the best place to put the Advantage is on the back of Kitty's head. It won't travel down far enough for her to lick it. Do not rub it in, the medication will come off on your fingers and she won't get the full dose needed to protect her. I wouldn't do any other location than the back of the head, as she will be able to lick it off between her shoulder blades and her back for example. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear of the flea issues you are experiencing. That is certainly an unusual response to Capstar and it would be worth reporting this to the veterinarian that you purchased it from. You are right not to put the advantage onto the scabby skin, it could worsen the irritation. A safe way of helping to remove some of the fleas is to give your kitty a bath with blue dawn dishwashing detergent. Whilst it has no protective effects it is safe and gentle to use. Capstar is only one effective for about 24 hours so it may actually have worked, it just isn't helping longer term. Environmental treatment for fleas is always very important too. Wash all of your cat's bedding and any blankets etc that she likes to sleep on. Your own bedding too if she is frequently on your bed. Consider steam cleaning all carpets and rugs in the house, and any fabric furniture too (like couches and chairs). You may need to resort to a 'flea bomb' product or call an exterminator if the problem is not easily controlled. You can also look on your cat's body to see if there is an area of skin that is NOT scabby, where you could maybe apply the advantage instead. The back of the neck is preferred since the cat cannot lick it off, but you can certainly apply it elsewhere if needed.

I would recommend that you avoid applying any spot on flea prevention product in any area that Delilah may be able to reach by grooming as ingestion of the product could make her unwell. Applying the product to the back of the neck only would be adequate and will keep her safe. You should note that over the counter flea prevention sold in supermarkets and pet shops is often ineffective and if you are experiencing a persistent or recurring flea problem I would recommend using a product prescribed by your veterinarian. I would also recommend treating your house for fleas using a product such as Indorex for example to ensure that there is nothing persisting in the environment that could be causing reintroduction of fleas to Delilah. It would also be recommended to use a product on a regular basis i.e. monthly for ongoing flea prevention.

The string of saliva may be due to a little nausea from licking the advantage. You need to part the hair and make sure that the advantage is applied directly to the skin to prevent it from running. Watch for any signs of vomiting or tremors. If you see either of these signs, have Chiky examined by your veterinarian.

You can put it on them, and keep each one in a separate room for the next 24 hours until it dries. Then they won’t kick it off each other. Be sure to apply the Advantage to the very back of their heads where they can’t reach it to lick off themselves.
