Does my 6-week-old kitten need milk replacement if already weaned?

At 6 weeks they are old enough to be weaned. You can started with dry kitten food mixed with a little water and canned food to entice them. If they eat well, then you can decrease the amount of canned food and water until they are eating dry food. The mom will also help by letting them nurse less and less. Once they are eating a good meal 3-4 times a day, they do no need any milk from mom and go to a new home.

A kitten at 8 weeks old is able to eat dry food just fine. If you want to put a little water or tuna juice on it to soften it you can but it is likely not necessary. If she will not eat the dry food you can always give her canned food. DO NOT mix it with cow's milk - that milk is not good for cats. If you must use milk you need to use kitten milk replacer. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the milk you are giving is milk replacer, this should be continued until Missy is 8 weeks old. You can continue to transition her to hard kibble when she is about 8 weeks old. By that time, she should be eating hard kibble and you can discontinue the milk replacer. She is likely not drinking water as much due to getting her liquid from the wet food and milk replacer. She will begin to drink more water as you transition her to hard kibble. I hope this helps!

Some kittens do nurse longer than others, and wean at a later date. He does need to learn to eat regular food, however, you can try to wean him. To start, mix dry kitten food with kitten milk replacer formula so they recognize the taste. Smear the mixture around their mouth with your finger and let them lick it off. Once they get used to the taste, they’ll seek it out elsewhere. As he get used to this, add in more dry food, and less formula until you have completely eliminated the formula.

No. Kitty was weaned by her mother between 5-8 weeks of age. She no longer needs milk and it could even upset her stomach. If the kitten is 4-6 weeks it should be fed solid food, not milk. You should try kitten wet food, warm it up before offering to the kitten. If kitten allows, you can hand-feed or even syringe feed. Please, remember that kittens at that age should be fed very small amounts every 2-3 hrs.
