Are sugar and salt toxic or harmful for my Alexandrian parrot to eat?

You don't mention what type of bird you have, I am going to assume a parrot? In birds it is best to avoid chocolate, caffeine, avocado, onion and garlic, comfrey, apple seeds, pits/stones from fruits, sugar free foods containing xylitol (this can cause issue in dogs and we don't know for sure about birds), foods high in fat or salt, mushrooms, dairy, grit, peanuts that have become moldy, and the plant portion of members of the nightshade family (i.e. tomato, potato, peppers, eggplant- the fruits aren't toxic but the leaves/plant parts are). Thanks for reaching out about Sonu. Aloe vera is not toxic but no nutritive studies have been performed on parrots to determine how much is advised. Keep is sparing, could be a component of a well rounded diet. Good luck.

Chocolate is a highly palatable food. Some of us know that all too well. Unfortunately, many birds seem to love chocolate almost as much as people. Chocolate is not bad for birds just because it is high in calories and fat though, it contains a compound called theobromine. Theobromine is toxic to dogs and cats as well, but birds, again due to their smaller size and more rapid metabolism, may be even more susceptible to its toxic effects. Generally, the sweeter the chocolate (more sugar), the less theobromine present (milk chocolate contains about 1-2 mg of theobromine per gram, dark unsweetened chocolate may contain as much as 15-16 mg per gram). Despite this, no chocolate should be given to birds. Signs of chocolate toxicity include: hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, heart arrhythmias, seizures, dark colored droppings and death. If you notice any of these signs take Polly to the veterinarian immediately.

Hi and thank you for your question, You will find all sorts of opinions about this. In general, eucalyptus can be used for perches but avoid the leaves and fruit. Edible fruit trees or Hibiscus branches are better. Regards

Neither of these should be given in any significant quantity. In some dog foods, there will be small amounts of sugars and salts. However, any excessive amount of either of these can result in illnesses. Salt in large amounts is especially dangerous, as this can result in kidney issues that can be difficult to resolve.

That is a great question. As far as I am aware the actual salt lamp should not be harmful to birds. However birds are very sensitive to air quality or particles in the air so I would watch the lamp closely to make sure the lamp does not break and cause abnormal fumes. hope that helps

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Mango is having this issue. Yes, many different metals can cause toxicity in birds if ingested but the main ones of concern are lead and zinc. You will need to take Mango to an avian vet when they are open. The metal snap will need to be removed even if it is made of a non harmless metal like stainless steel. I suggest you go to a speciality center as they are more likely to have an endoscope which will be better than doing an open surgery for removal. Sometimes, depending on where the metal piece is located in the GI tract and the size of the snap, they can try removal via bulking agents fed orally instead of doing any invasive procedures.
