What common human foods are dangerous for my pet bird to eat?

Peanuts are great treats, but they are fatty and can lead to obesity. Try to limit them, if possible. Boomer can eat pretty much anything that you eat with a few exceptions. Do not feed chocolate, avocado, caffeine or anything with alcohol. She can eat grapes, blueberries, strawberries, pitted cherries, banana, pineapple and apple (no seeds). Limit fruit to no more than 10% of the diet. Too much may cause loose droppings. Acceptable vegetable include corn, peas, green beans, other cooked beans, potatoes (cooked), broccoli, zucchini, kale and sweet potato. She can have cooked grains and cooked plain pastas. Scrambled egg makes a great weekend treat. This list is by no means all inclusive. Other lists can be found online using the search engine of your choosing.

Fruits, vegetables and greens should account for approximately 20 - 25% of the daily diet. Pale vegetables, with a high water composition (i.e. Iceberg or Head lettuce, celery) offer very little nutritional value. Avocado is reported to be potentially toxic. Chocolate is a highly palatable food. Some of us know that all too well. Unfortunately, many birds seem to love chocolate almost as much as people. Chocolate is not bad for birds just because it is high in calories and fat though, it contains a compound called theobromine. Theobromine is toxic to dogs and cats as well, but birds, again due to their smaller size and more rapid metabolism, may be even more susceptible to its toxic effects. Generally, the sweeter the chocolate (more sugar), the less theobromine present (milk chocolate contains about 1-2 mg of theobromine per gram, dark unsweetened chocolate may contain as much as 15-16 mg per gram). Despite this, no chocolate should be given to birds. Signs of chocolate toxicity include: hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, heart arrhythmias, seizures, dark colored droppings and death. If you notice any of these signs take Polly to the veterinarian immediately.

Thanks for reaching out about Rangu. This depends on the type of bird. If we are discussing a parrot (lovebird to macaw), seeds are a poor diet, as is very hight in fat and low in vitamin/minerals. The diet should consist of a wide variety of vegetables, a proteins source such as beans/legumes, cooked carbohydrates as an energy source, and avian pellets. Good luck.

Both of these substances in large quantities can be harmful to birds. Salt is definitely more dangerous however and should be generally avoided. Sugar is not truly toxic but is definitely not recommended as part of the diet for a parrot.

Hello again! These items look great for King, but the bag is correct - generally, parakeets and parrots should be fed a pellet-based diet to avoid fatty liver disease. Seed diets are high in fat (even without the sunflower seeds), so should be given as a treat supplementally only. Millet should also be given in moderation. Your bird can definitely have fruits, but include some veggies, too! Grapes, apple, banana, broccoli, kale, green beans, and peppers can be great for birds. Avoid avocado, apple cores/seeds, cherries (with seeds - seedless are ok) onion, and garlic. Dried fruits are ok too, just avoid the ones that have added sugar. I hope this helps! The best thing to offer your parrot is a diet that consists mainly of pellets (80%) and then fruits and veggies (15-20%). Less than 5% of his diet should be from “people food” because it will not give him the proper vitamins and minerals he needs. The good news is that Rangu is still very young and you should be able to adjust his dietary habits fairly easily. Try to refrain from feeding him any people food for the time being except for very small amount when training/working with him. I hope this helps.
