My parrot's beak is crooked. Is surgery expensive, or are there alternatives?

A little uneveness isn't much cause for concern, as birds will naturally file down their beaks on surfaces such as perches or cuttlebones, etc. However if the beak is very badly aligned, or keeps overgrowing, having it checked out by a vet is a good idea to make sure there isn't an illness, injury or even nutrient deficiency causing it. In the case of chronic beak misalignment, regular filing or trimming may be needed to help keep the beak in shape.

If you believe his beak is broken or cracked, I would seek veterinary attention for him. A cracked beak is like a broken tooth and as bone and nerve endings are connected to the beak, such injuries are painful. A cracked beak won't grow together, but will grow out over time. Amputated or torn off beaks, as well as fractured beaks, will not grow back, but can be repaired. Depending on the severity, your vet may use special, nontoxic glue and bandage a broken / cracked beak. DO NOT use glue at home, as most glues are toxic to birds. I hope this is helpful!

Some birds may need to have their beaks trimmed regularly, even if they have toys or objects to do so. It is a good idea to bring Stuart into your vet to have the beak trimmed and examined for any causes that could be worsening it. Your vet may also be able to show you how to trim back the beak on your own.

If the break is very small and isn't bothersome or painful, you may just want to leave it alone to eventually grow out and heal. Keeping the area clean, dry, and free of debris can help it to heal and prevent infection. If the beak is actively hanging open, the crack is very large, or it becomes painful or is impeding your bird's ability to eat or drink, it will need to be seen by a vet for repair and treatment as it can become infected or impede normal ability. Keeping your bird indoors until the beak starts to heal is best to avoid further injury while your bird is out and about (if he's not kept in a cage during the day.)

Beak trimming is quite simple but if you never done it before i would definitely recommend taking him to an avian vet specialist to have it done, there are several ways, the fastest is done with an electric rotary filer tool, it takes less than a minute. it can also be done with a regular filer but it might take a while to finish the job, depending on how much needs to be trimmed.

Poor Sky. I would recommend taking him to a vet for a proper beak trim so he can start eating normally. Typically over grown beaks are actually due to nutrition. I would recommend taking his diet with you to the vet to discuss how to change his food to prevent beak over growth and possibly take him for more routine trimmings. hope tha thelps

One cause of a sudden overgrowth of the beak in birds is liver problems. I am not sure when the last time that Lila had blood work performed, but that would be where I would recommend that you start. Another cause, given Lila's age, to consider would be arthritis in her jaw. This can be harder to determine depending on the severity of the changes. Sometimes it can be seen by your veterinarian by performing radiographs (x-rays) of the skull, but sometimes a CT scan may be required. I would recommend to start by having Lila evaluated by a veterinarian. They can perform a thorough examination, and see if they can appreciate any pain on manipulation of Lila's jaw. From there, they can perform the diagnostics as outlined above, and may have other recommendations based on their findings. As far as preventing the long beak growth, that will depend on the underlying cause. With cases of liver damage, often the growth can be slowed with treatments for the liver, and with jaw arthritis, birds are often more comfortable and will keep their beak a more appropriate length when the pain is controlled. Both of these treatments would need to be started, and monitored, by your veterinarian. Please do not give Lila any human medications, as many of them can cause harm to our feathered friends.
