My parrot's beak is broken. Will it grow back or need repair?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend separating the injured bird from the other two immediately. Keep in a safe cage in a warm draft free area. Provide food and water and minimize stress and handling once separated. I would recommend taking him to an avian veterinarian to assess the severity of the injury and determine what treatment may be needed. If the break is very small and isn't bothersome or painful, you may just want to leave it alone to eventually grow out and heal. Keeping the area clean, dry, and free of debris can help it to heal and prevent infection. If the beak is actively hanging open, the crack is very large, or it becomes painful or is impeding your bird's ability to eat or drink, it will need to be seen by a vet for repair and treatment as it can become infected or impede normal ability. Keeping your bird indoors until the beak starts to heal is best to avoid further injury while your bird is out and about (if he's not kept in a cage during the day.)

It appears that there is a malformation of your bird’s beak. This could be a congenital malformation or due to some type of injury or trauma. If your bird is still eating and drinking normally I would not be too concerned about it. If you're seeing white lesions in his mouth or on the inside of his beak it could indicate an issue such as a bacterial or yeast infection that has taken hold. If you're seeing streaking on the outside of the beak, it could indicate a cracked beak from an injury or even poor nutrition/underlying illnesses. If it's impeding his ability to eat or the lesions are on the inside of his beak/mouth it is best to seek veterinary care to try and find the underlying cause and get treatment. Making sure Kiko is on a diet that is formulated for parrots can also ensure he's getting the right nutrients. You can offer fruits and vegetables as extras, but a balanced diet is needed for optimal health.

Beak cracking can be due to a number of things including injuries or even poor diet. If the beak is badly broken or cracked to the point is is bleeding, causing pain, or keeping Chikcy from eating, seeking veterinary care is best. Making sure he is on a balanced diet can also help ensure the beak stays healthy and grows well.

You can use a warm washcloth to soak and clean the beak after each feeding. Provide a mineral block, concrete perches or bird safe chew toys to maintain beak length. If it is cracked, overgrown or misaligned then Blue will need to be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet.

A little uneveness isn't much cause for concern, as birds will naturally file down their beaks on surfaces such as perches or cuttlebones, etc. However if the beak is very badly aligned, or keeps overgrowing, having it checked out by a vet is a good idea to make sure there isn't an illness, injury or even nutrient deficiency causing it. In the case of chronic beak misalignment, regular filing or trimming may be needed to help keep the beak in shape.
