My parakeet's beak is too long, and she won't trim it. What to do?

Poor Sky. I would recommend taking him to a vet for a proper beak trim so he can start eating normally. Typically over grown beaks are actually due to nutrition. I would recommend taking his diet with you to the vet to discuss how to change his food to prevent beak over growth and possibly take him for more routine trimmings. hope tha thelps

As long as it is just a little overgrown and she can still eat well (can tell by having the brown or green part of the poop present as they can pretend to eat) there is not a rush to get into the vet. It will need to be clipped and shaped if it gets really long though. Sometimes this can happen if a bird is eating only seeds so try to see if Turtle can be convinced to eat a pelleted diet by pretending to eat it yourself often around her and some patience.

In the future, I recommend getting a cuttlebone for her to use to keep her beak trimmed. You should also make sure that her diet is balanced - she should be eating a commercial diet formulated for budgies and occasional fruits and veggies as treats. A little uneveness isn't much cause for concern, as birds will naturally file down their beaks on surfaces such as perches or cuttlebones, etc. However if the beak is very badly aligned, or keeps overgrowing, having it checked out by a vet is a good idea to make sure there isn't an illness, injury or even nutrient deficiency causing it. In the case of chronic beak misalignment, regular filing or trimming may be needed to help keep the beak in shape.

Beak trimming is quite simple but if you never done it before i would definitely recommend taking him to an avian vet specialist to have it done, there are several ways, the fastest is done with an electric rotary filer tool, it takes less than a minute. it can also be done with a regular filer but it might take a while to finish the job, depending on how much needs to be trimmed.

It may need trimming, but it would be best to have Louie evaluated by your avian veterinarian. Overgrown beaks can be caused by trauma or nutritional deficiency. If you have never trimmed a beak before, it would be strongly recommended to have the bet do it.

If nails growing long rapidly, this could be an indication of a liver disease, so a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan.
