My parakeet's beak is too long and he can't eat. What should I do?

Some birds may need to have their beaks trimmed regularly, even if they have toys or objects to do so. It is a good idea to bring Stuart into your vet to have the beak trimmed and examined for any causes that could be worsening it. Your vet may also be able to show you how to trim back the beak on your own.

Hello! As long as it is just a little overgrown and she can still eat well (can tell by having the brown or green part of the poop present as they can pretend to eat) there is not a rush to get into the vet. It will need to be clipped and shaped if it gets really long though. Sometimes this can happen if a bird is eating only seeds so try to see if Turtle can be convinced to eat a pelleted diet by pretending to eat it yourself often around her and some patience.

In the future, I recommend getting a cuttlebone for her to use to keep her beak trimmed. You should also make sure that her diet is balanced - she should be eating a commercial diet formulated for budgies and occasional fruits and veggies as treats. It appears that there is a malformation of your bird’s beak. This could be a congenital malformation or due to some type of injury or trauma. If your bird is still eating and drinking normally I would not be too concerned about it. One cause of a sudden overgrowth of the beak in birds is liver problems. I am not sure when the last time that Lila had blood work performed, but that would be where I would recommend that you start. Another cause, given Lila's age, to consider would be arthritis in her jaw. This can be harder to determine depending on the severity of the changes. Sometimes it can be seen by your veterinarian by performing radiographs (x-rays) of the skull, but sometimes a CT scan may be required. I would recommend to start by having Lila evaluated by a veterinarian. They can perform a thorough examination, and see if they can appreciate any pain on manipulation of Lila's jaw. From there, they can perform the diagnostics as outlined above, and may have other recommendations based on their findings. As far as preventing the long beak growth, that will depend on the underlying cause. With cases of liver damage, often the growth can be slowed with treatments for the liver, and with jaw arthritis, birds are often more comfortable and will keep their beak a more appropriate length when the pain is controlled. Both of these treatments would need to be started, and monitored, by your veterinarian. Please do not give Lila any human medications, as many of them can cause harm to our feathered friends. Thanks for reaching out about Sky. Feather loss can be due to poor diet, stress, over-preening, external parasites, skin infections, metabolic disease, viral disease and more. Research and correct the diet birds do poorly on an all seed diet. A veterinarian is probably needed to exam and recommend diagnostics/ treatments. Good luck.

A little uneveness isn't much cause for concern, as birds will naturally file down their beaks on surfaces such as perches or cuttlebones, etc. However if the beak is very badly aligned, or keeps overgrowing, having it checked out by a vet is a good idea to make sure there isn't an illness, injury or even nutrient deficiency causing it. In the case of chronic beak misalignment, regular filing or trimming may be needed to help keep the beak in shape.
