Why is my parakeet's butt swollen and red after poop removal?

Hello. Sorry Pearl is having this issue. Yes, I would take her to see the vet. That looks very sore and abnormal. It is hard for me to tell what may be going on based on the photo. It could be the beginning signs of a prolapse. It could be trauma or signs of parasite infection. Regardless, you need to get her to the vet for an exam so she can get the proper treatment. A veterinary visit is recommended the sooner the better, as this can develop into something serious quickly. Monitor appetite and water intake. The cloaca should contract, just try and keep the tissue clean and ensure she is able defecate and urinate. If tissue is exposed, clean with a warm moistened towel and lubricate with petroleum jelly. A veterinary visit is recommended as sutures might be necessary. Antibiotics, pain medications and hormones might also be recommended. Remove all nesting material and alter photoperiod to dissuade additional egg laying. Check and correct diet as calcium and other nutritional deficiencies can play a part in egg binding. Heat support in the 80-85 F range is also recommended. Good luck.

Check her vent for redness or swelling. Monitor for loose droppings. Submit a sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. If she is of egg laying age, have her physically examined by your vet or an experienced avian vet to diagnose or rule out being egg bound.

Unfortunately, those are symptoms that need to be seen in person by a vet, because they are not possible to diagnose over the internet. If multiple of your birds are having loose stools and are housed together, I would be concerned there is something going on such as a contagious illness, parasites, nutritional issue, or unclean environment. Treating for parasites and making sure all birds have access to fresh food and water and a clean environment may help. Separating out any sick birds until they recover may also help. If the problem continues, your bird(s) worsen, or they do not improve with home treatment, then you will need to find a vet in your area that can take a look at them and determine the problem.
