My parakeet's vent is exposed after egg removal. How to treat?

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female | unspayed | 1lb

I successfully removed the egg from my parakeet last night but her vent is still exposed. Is there an ointment I can put on it to make sure it is not infected or something I can do overall to make her feel better. She is in a quarantine cage right now

Thanks for reaching out. Do you mean the cloaca is exposed or the uterus (prolapsed tissue) is exposed? The cloaca should contract, just try and keep the tissue clean and ensure she is able defecate and urinate. If tissue is exposed, clean with a warm moistened towel and lubricate with petroleum jelly. A veterinary visit is recommended as sutures might be necessary. Antibiotics, pain medications and hormones might also be recommended. Remove all nesting material and alter photoperiod to dissuade additional egg laying. Check and correct diet as calcium and other nutritional deficiencies can play a part in egg binding. Heat support in the 80-85 F range is also recommended.

If Katrin is egg bound she will likely be unable to pass the egg on her own. In most cases, this requires veterinary care as incorrectly trying to remove the egg can cause it to break inside the vent which can lead to infection. If you're already feeding her a proper diet, soaking her bottom in warm water, or using a little olive oil around her vent may help to pass the egg gently without breaking it.

In some cases, increase in humidity, lubrication of the cloacal area, and administration of supplements and medication called oxytocin that can help expulsion of the egg. You can soak her in a warm bath deep enough to submerge her vent for 15-20 minutes. Then use a bit of olive oil around the vent to help her lay. If this is not successful, have her seen by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian.

Hello! I am sorry Sky had a problem passing her egg. In the photo it looks very possible that she has a prolapse and should see a vet. If left untreated a prolapse can dry out, bleed, and become infected. It can also make her unable to pass another egg. Is she has been egg bound for 5 days, that is serious and a veterinary visit is recommended ASAP. Try placing her cage in a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes. Most egg binding could be associated with a calcium deficiency so offering dark greens is important. The environment should be warm, 80-85 F range, 24/7.
