My young lovebird has a swollen eye. Is it an infection or trauma?

The right side may be a bit swollen (infection or injury) or it may be "normal" for him. Types of infection include bacterial, fungal or mites. Monitor for lethargy, discharge, loss of appetite or loose droppings. A physical exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian would be recommended. At the very least, Ivy may get a clean bill of health and you will get peace of mind.

It is very difficult to say what it may be just by looking at some photos. My best guess would be some injury/inflammation to the cornea due to mild trauma. He would need an exam in person with a vet so they can use an ophthalmoscope to get a better look at the eye. Thanks for reaching out about Dawn and including photos. This appears to be a contusion. Could she have flown into something? Any other animals that could have possible harmed her, other birds or cats? Monitor appetite and activity. If lesion grows or Dawn becomes weak or stops eating, a veterinary visit is recommended. The lesion is probably due to self scratching, but could be in result of a skin infection, sinus pressure (bird's sinuses surround the eye), bruising, feather mites and more. Monitor for now but if get larger or really seems to be bothering him, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

Oh goodness. Poor little Guy. Unfortunately the pictures are too blurry to really visualize the lesion. I would worry about infection or possible self trauma. Is he rubbing his beak on anything in the cage? Is there crust or discharge from the nostril? If so then he may have an upper respiratory infection and should be seen my an avian veterinarian to develop a treatment plans. I hope he improves quickly .

That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
