Why is my 14-year-old green cheek conure limping after a nail trim?

Poor Turri! It sounds as if the injured toe/foot is causing him some distress and pain which could be why he is showing other symptoms of illness. If he is limping and also acting ill, it would be best to bring him to a vet ASAP so that the foot can be examined and treated, and any other underlying conditions ruled out to help get him feeling better. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him warm, with low, flat perches that are easy to stand on and food and water dishes that can easily be climbed in and out of may help make him more comfortable.

Poor JD! It's possible he may have injured the leg, and is now recovering. If he is continuing to improve, keeping an eye on it is best. However, if you see a worsening of symptoms, the improvement stops, visible deformity or bruising, or swelling appears, then bringing him to your local avian vet for a complete exam is best.

Bumblefoot is very common in these little guys unfortunately, and there is no way to know for sure without seeing Puff. This would be my first guess. He really needs to be examined by a veterinarian, and likely needs to be on antibiotics and potentially a pain medication like Metacam. Hope that helps!

It's possible the nails were trimmed too short and are either now a bit painful or making it hard for him to grip properly. Making sure he has the right size perch for his size may help make it easier for him to grip and stay upright. If the problem persists, or he shows any other issues or signs of illness, then ruling out anything more serious with your vet is best.

Ouch! That does sound like she's injured her foot. Until you can get to the vet, providing some low, flat perches that are easier to stand on (like a platform rather than having to curl her toes around it) and food and water dishes she can easily climb in and out of may help her relax the foot a bit and maintain her balance easier. Keeping her warm and preventing her from picking at or chewing on the foot can also help. If she's housed with other birds, moving her to a hospital cage to avoid being picked on is also a good idea.

Your bird will probably need to have the nails trimmed about every 8-12 weeks. The toe in the picture does look a little abnormal but it is probably not because of the nail. If the toe is causing an issue I would recommend having your vet take a look at it. Xrays may need to be performed to revaluation the bone. I hope this helps. Poor Melvin! A photo would help me see the damage to the nail, and I would be happy to offer you a consultation and let you know what I think after seeing a picture. It sounds like Melvin damaged the quick, or the small blood vessel that goes down the center of the nail. This is initially painful, so Melvin may need to see a vet to get some parrot-friendly pain medication, especially if you notice that he is not placing the foot normally.
