My parakeet's toenail bent and bled. Does he need a vet visit?

I am sorry to hear about Leroy! I would recommend an examination by a veterinarian to try to figure out why Leroy is having pain in his foot. There are many possible causes including trauma, bacterial infection, arthritis, and bumblefoot (pododermatitis). The vet may recommend an x-ray of the foot or may be able to determine what is going on based on the appearance and then recommend appropriate treatment. I wouldn't take a "wait and see" approach to this issue as these problems can worsen and cause long term complications that are more difficult to treat.

Hi there. Sorry it has taken so long for someone to respond to your question. My best guess without seeing him is that he will be just fine. I cannot tell you whether or not the nail will grow back for sure but MOST LIKELY it will. It depends on whether or not the nail bed was damaged. I'm sure he is nibbling at it and holding it up because it hurts. It's best for him not to nibble on it so he may need to wear a special collar made for birds to prevent him from doing that. If the toe associated with that nail is swollen you should DEFINITELY take him to your vet for an examination. Be sure to use a vet that is used to treating birds. It sounds like you are very worried and if that is the case, there is nothing wrong with taking him in for an exam as a precaution. It may help to put your mind at ease. I hope this helps! Thanks for reaching out about Violet. Black spots under the nail (sub-keratin) can often result from bleeding (hemorrhage) with the possibility of liver disease resulting in blood clotting problems. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Liver disease can be serious and manifest in other problems. Veterinary treatment early in the disease process has an improved prognosis. Causes can be bacterial, viral, dietary and other. Good luck.

Thanks for your question about Elmo, and I am sorry to hear that this is happening to him. If the area is continuously getting irritated and injured, I would recommend having him evaluated. Your veterinarian may recommend a bandage, and can prescribe medications, such as pain relievers. Having the area covered and protected may allow It to heal faster. As far as the wing trim goes, you may decide to allow the feathers to grow out and not be cut in the future if you want Elmo to be able to fly. That is okay, but I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about how to keep him safe while flying! I hope that gives you a place to start, and that Elmo feels better soon.

Poor bird! If the foot is at all infected, trying to find a vet that can help in person is best. However, until you can find one, it is a good idea to separate the bird from any cage mates to keep from being picked on, and move him to a warm hospital cage with larger, flat perches that will make perching easier on his feet. Keeping the foot clean and dry and using an ointment such as Blu-kote (most feed and pet stores carry this for use in poultry and other birds) can help prevent infection. You can also Google how to make a bird-sized Elizabethan (cone) collar to put on the bird so that he can't get to his foot and bite it while it heals.

Hi, It looks like Charm’s foot had trauma that caused a break in the skin (hence the bleeding). What you are seeing now looks like a scab that needs to heal. I would suspect Charm is in some degree of pain or discomfort and I can’t rule out that a bone may have been broken, so a trip to the veterinarian for an exam and pain medications (and perhaps antibiotics) would be best. In the meantime, keep the foot clean and dry as the scabs heal, lower any perches if she seems hesitant to weight bear, and make sure she eats and drinks well.
