Why is my budgie's toe crooked? How often should I trim his nails?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 3 days old

My budgies toe looks crooked. He had long nails for a while and it was kind of sitting sideways. If his nails are long enough for that long has his toe grown crooked? Had his nails trimmed two months go but they have grown back to almost the same size already. How often should I trim them? Is he having a growth spurt or something?

Your bird will probably need to have the nails trimmed about every 8-12 weeks. The toe in the picture does look a little abnormal but it is probably not because of the nail. If the toe is causing an issue I would recommend having your vet take a look at it. Xrays may need to be performed to revaluation the bone.

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
