My bird has a white spot on its eye. Is it an abscess or a feather?

If does not move, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Corneal scarring, corneal deposits (lipids, cholesterol) and other problems are psosible. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Giving the upper eyelid lesion as well a skin infection is more likely. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Your vet may want to perform a skin scrape to identify underlying cause more specifically. Disinfection can possibly be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Thanks for reaching out about Valerio and including a photo. The lesion is probably due to self scratching, but could be in result of a skin infection, sinus pressure (bird's sinuses surround the eye), bruising, feather mites and more. Monitor for now but if get larger or really seems to be bothering him, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

I would advise you have an avian veterinarian examine the growth unless it resolves on it's own. Possibilities include an eyelid gland infection, a granuloma or collection of inflammatory cells, or a tumor which could be benign or malignant. Best to have it looked at and your vet can determine what steps are necessary to diagnose and treat it effectively. I hope this helps and I wish you and Mango good luck. It's hard to tell from the photo, but it could be a spot with new feathers coming in. If the area begins to bleed, worsens, swells or a cyst/blister forms in place of a feather, or it is bothersome to Kiwi, having a vet take a look in person is best. Otherwise, just keeping an eye on the spot for now if Kiwi is otherwise doing well and healthy is best.

This could be an infection or ingrown feather (feather cyst). Placing a warm compress on the lesion could allow an abscess to organize. A veterinary visit would be best to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. As young birds are very sensitive to medications, you should not apply any topical medications at this time until after a veterinary visit.

Although a picture of it would help to determine the underlying cause more specifically, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
