My baby bird can't swallow food after hand feeding. Is it choking?

It is possible he/she may have aspirated some food into the lungs. This can lead to respiratory infection or even pneumonia. The bird should be examined by a wildlife veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds.

Thanks for reaching out about Zap and including a picture. Regurgitation is common with birds who have ingested something toxic or causing a partial or complete obstruction. Metablic diseases such as renal or hepatic diseases can also cause regurgitation. Crop infections (bacterial, yeast or fungal) can make them nauseous. These small birds can not go too long without digesting food. Unfortunately there is little that can be done at home,, so finding a veterinarian with avian experience. By the map, you're not too far from Tacoma, but might have to travel to Seattle for a veterinarian. Good luck.

This could be food, an infection or other, and would also be an answer for the sneezing. A veterinary visit would be a good idea, prior to becoming a more advanced problem. Good luck.

Providing heat and humidity support are very important. Concerns are over some underlying disease (bacterial, viral, developmental) and that is why hen kicked it out of the nest. A veterinary visit might be needed to assess and determine if antibiotics might be needed. Good luck.

Hello! The crop is supposed to enlarge as it is filling, but his heaving makes me worry that he could have aspirated some of the food into his lungs and may be at risk for pneumonia. I would recommend surrendering him into a wildlife sanctuary or a veterinary hospital that cares for wildlife. They will have baby bird formula and avian electrolyte supplements for optimal nutrition and can give him antibiotics if necessary. This will give him the best chance of survival. Thanks for reaching out about Chicken. If he is still regurgitating, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Foreign bodies in the crop are easier to remove than in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Monitor appetite. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can provide some aid. Good luck.

Based on the behavior you are describing I am concerned that Alif may have something stuck in her throat/mouth that is causing her discomfort and making her not want to eat. She may also be regurgitating in an attempt to dislodge whatever is stuck. However, this behavior could also be a seizure type behavior. It is hard to say without actually seeing what Alif is doing. You need to get her in to a vet as soon as possible. Until then, continue to offer her plenty of fresh water and her favorite foods to encourage eating. You may also try to gently massage her throat area and see if that helps. Best of luck.
