Help! Baby bird's crop is swollen and heaving after feeding.

Hello, today I've recently encountered a fallen baby sparrow who I've taken in and attempted to nurture. I am no bird expert and I'm very stressed because I'm not quite sure how to help them. I've read as many articles as possible and tried to use them to help. However my buggest concern is feeding the poor thing. I've watered down wet dog food into a yoghurt texture but I noticed their corp swelling. I'm afraid I might have caused him pain because he is heaving (I think.) It's getting bigger.

Hello!

The crop is supposed to enlarge as it is filling, but his heaving makes me worry that he could have aspirated some of the food into his lungs and may be at risk for pneumonia. I would recommend surrendering him into a wildlife sanctuary or a veterinary hospital that cares for wildlife. They will have baby bird formula and avian electrolyte supplements for optimal nutrition and can give him antibiotics if necessary. This will give him the best chance of survival.

Thanks for reaching out about your bird and including photos. A crop infection with a yeast (Candida) is highly likely, but bacteria could also be a component. Without medication, recovery is unlikely. Supply heat support in the 80-85 F range for immune support. Schedule a veterinary visit for prescription of medications. Good luck.

A bulging crop may indicate a full crop and that you may be giving too much food at a time. If it doesn't return to normal after a few hours, reducing the amount of food, or making sure that Sailor doesn't have an impacted/obstructed crop is best. Feeding smaller meals more often may also help reduce the crop being overfull.

Crop infections (bacteria, fungal), ingested foreign bodies and obstructions, systemic illness are all possibilities. Check and correct husbandry, as baby birds need to be kept warm. My old dove's crop is hard and swollen after eating raw egg. Why?

There may be a mass in the crop or it could be severely impacted. Have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds. Hopefully, it will be something treatable. The vet can also assess the feathers to rule out infection or parasites. In the meantime, clean and sanitize the cage. Sanitize bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Change the paper or substrate daily. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the vet.

Baby dove vomiting after hand-feeding. Is it overfed or sick?

It's possible you could be overfilling his crop, causing him to regurgitate up some of the extra food. Checking his crop (located on the neck, it will feel like a little balloon when full, or be visible if his feathers haven't grown in) can alert you if he's full or not. If it's full, waiting a bit to feed him again or decreasing the amount fed and just feeding more often can help. If his crop is always full, or he is unable to keep any food down, having a vet take a look to rule out issues such as obstruction or illness is best.

Hi and thank you for your question, The crop does look distended, especially if this is not right after a feeding. I don't recommend stopping the formula at once regardless of his age. You should reduce it gradually and only stop it once he is getting very little (5-10ml once daily) and is eating well on his own. Hopefully the crop will come down to a more normal size. Regards
