My African Grey parrot with PBFD vomited water. What should I do?

I'm very sorry to hear that. unfortunately PBFD is a fatal disease in African Grey parrots, i am sorry to say there is no hope, it is just a question of time. if Cloudy is not symptomatic yet then it's not possible to know when the disease will burst but she could have many more months to live, if the symptoms already started then he she does not have much more time i'm afraid.

Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid. Remove perches and give a soft towel on which to rest. Try offering water and a liquid food through a syringe for calories and hydrate. Being ill can have multiple causes such as infections (bacterial, fungal), metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), heart problems, nutritional deficiencies and more. Hi and thank you for your question, Vomiting/regurgitation in a parrot is potentially serious. There are many potential causes - lead/zinc poisoning, infections (bacterial, viral, fungal) etc. etc. You really have to try and find an avian vet for this. A good place to start (for the vet) would be to get Xray images and see if Nano has ingested any foreign objects and/or has a very dilated stomach. Regards

Regurgitation can be caused by many thing such as ingestion of foreign material (plastic, fabric, wood, etc), toxic ingestion (lead, zinc,plants), metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), infections and several viral diseases. Each of these have different means of diagnosis and possible treatments, therefore a veterinary visit is recommended. Chronic regurgitation can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, malnutrition, and more, making a veterinary visit even more expedient. Try offering small amounts of food and water, more frequently to decrease possibility of regurgitation. Good luck.

I am truly sorry at the loss of your precious Luna. I have two Greys of my own. There is no known disinfectant that will kill the PBFD virus. You can sanitize hard, non porous items such as bowls or bottles. Soft toys and perches should be discarded. The cage can be sanitized, but the PBFD virus can remain in the environment for long periods of time, so you be assuming a certain amount of risk. Unless there was a written healthy pet clause and/or health guarantee, you may not have much recourse. It would be your word against the breeder/seller. Most reputable breeders will test new birds and chicks for PBFD. You should always ask this and about preventative care. If a breeder does not test or does not have their birds cared for by an experienced avian veterinarian, find a different breeder.

Thanks for reaching out about Jock. A loose stool needs to be differentiated between polyuria (increased urine) and diarrhea. Older parrots are prone to kidney and liver disease that can result in increased water consumption, therefore more urine. A veterinary visit is highly recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Diet needs to be reviewed to include a wide variety of nutrients and minimal (or no) seed. Vitamin A deficiencies can lead to renal tubule problems. There is no at-home remedy that can be recommended without knowing the cause. Good luck.
