My African Grey parrot has PBFD. Is there a cure or any hope?

This is likely to be related to PBFD, as you probably know already this disease has no cure and it is eventually fatal, you should monitor her in the next few days to see if it was a one time thing or if the problem is getting worse. if it is getting worse you will need to take her to an avian vet ASAP.

I am truly sorry at the loss of your precious Luna. I have two Greys of my own. There is no known disinfectant that will kill the PBFD virus. You can sanitize hard, non porous items such as bowls or bottles. Soft toys and perches should be discarded. The cage can be sanitized, but the PBFD virus can remain in the environment for long periods of time, so you be assuming a certain amount of risk. Unless there was a written healthy pet clause and/or health guarantee, you may not have much recourse. It would be your word against the breeder/seller. Most reputable breeders will test new birds and chicks for PBFD. You should always ask this and about preventative care. If a breeder does not test or does not have their birds cared for by an experienced avian veterinarian, find a different breeder.

It is important to have Pina examined by an experienced avian veterinarian as soon as possible. Rule out other, possibly treatable, causes for her condition. This will require a physical exam and possibly bloodwork, xrays and a fecal examination. There isn't a reliable test for PDD, so it is usually a diagnosis of exclusion. Unfortunately, the prognosis can be poor for birds infected with PDD. Treatment is largely supportive and may include anti inflammatories, supplemental heat, a stress free environment, isolation from other birds and a special diet that is easily digestible. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid. Remove perches and give a soft towel on which to rest. Try offering water and a liquid food through a syringe for calories and hydrate. Being ill can have multiple causes such as infections (bacterial, fungal), metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), heart problems, nutritional deficiencies and more. Proper nutrition and heat support can help stimulate the immune system. If tests return positive, general anti-viral might delay progression but have not shown to be curative. Good luck.

Stress/behavior is common a nd can consist of breeding, nutritional or environmental stressors. Diseases can also lead to pulling feathers including infectious diseases (viral, bacterial), metabolic disorders (liver, renal), skin diseases and others. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and try to determine a cause. Diet and husbandry practices need to be reviewed with a veterinarian experienced with birds. Some diagnostic tests will probably be recommended and necessary to come to a conclusion. There is no topical medication that is going to cure or even stabilize this condition. Good luck.
